Re: Stoopid drum deal of the day: Sonor Jungle

Re the hardware on your Jungle kit- it looks just like the hardware that came with my Sonor Safari and Sonor Players Kit. They might all share the same specs for tom mounts, floor toms, bass drum...

Re: My personal list of rock and roll's top cowbell moments

LOL! The strangest I've seen. How low can you go? Here's a Wikipedia quote re his child's throne seating: "He had a powerful, distinctive style – he sat very low behind his kit (often side-on at...

Re: Why the "hate" for nylon tips??

I also use nylon for longevity and don't sense a noticeable difference in the sounds created for rock/pop that I play. I do notice the heightened stick definition on the ride and hats with nylon. I...

Re: Stoopid drum deal of the day: Sonor Jungle

Does look like a killer deal- I've seen these Sonor Jungle sets and always wished I had one- a highly upgraded Safari so it must sound incredible.

Re: Smaller thinner kicks with good sound- ideas?

I recently bought a slightly used Sonor Players kit for around $350 and the 20 x 12 bass drum had tremendous punch and bass without micing. It cut through sharper than my Ludwig Club Date 14 x 20...

Re: Went to Memphis Drum Shop (again)...

+1
Ben does a great job on the MyCymbals demos. Sometimes I wish he would crash a bit more without adding the bass drum so I could hear the crash by itself several times.

Re: Is Ringo a good drummer?

I've often wondered, who were the drumming influence Ringo learned from?
I don't recall reading that much info on the subject.

Re: Sonor Players Kit from Sam Ash

I picked up a virtually brand new set for $350 last week, got it home and immediately changed the snare, toms' heads.
The bass drum had a PS3 on the batter and a Holz cut-out on the res.
The kit...

Re: Ludwig Club Date NOT discontinued

I have a Cavern Club SE in blue oyster pearl-20, 12, 14, and it is a wonderful sounding kit, very round for sure. My snare was a bit fussy in getting the snares to resonate properly, but I've got it...

Re: Sonor Players Kit from Sam Ash

Thanks, Larry.
Looks like great recommendations all around.
What type of branded heads for all drums did you replace the Sonor-Chinese heads with?
I'm thinking something with a bit attack to...

Re: Sonor Players Kit from Sam Ash

What does everyone think of their Player kit now that they've had it for almost a year?
I'm considering buying one and have found several that are barely used at a deep discount. My GC will also...

Re: This is a great interview with Jeff Pocaro

Jeff's my hero.
Whenever I'm concerned about keeping a groove going for a tune, I'll refer back to some of his solid work to refresh my mind/muscle memories, reminding simple & steady is GREAT.

Re: Bill's site

I subscribed to Bill Bachman's site last summer when he had a free 2 week trial and went through his lessons as much as possible, downloading what lessons I could in PDFs.
To this day I have...

Re: Hi Hat Foot Beats on 2 & 4

This YouTube video called "19 blues drum shuffles" has 2 variations labeled "Steve Gadd" -- the hi hat beat is played on the "and" of each quarter note.

Re: Hi Hat Foot Beats on 2 & 4

Larry:
Great observations/advise and timely as I've joined in a [traditional style ]jazzy blues band and hear that simple, spacious style being played on the original recordings we're covering....

Re: Hi Hat Foot Beats on 2 & 4

Larry:
Since you play a lot of blues-based music, would you favor 2&4 on the hats for that, or would you utilize them on other beats?
Some music seems better suited to only 2 &4, but perhaps that's...

Hi Hat Foot Beats on 2 & 4

When do you play hi-hat beats with your foot? I keep the foot going on 2 & 4 around 90% of the time (when keeping time or brief fills/solos) for rock, pop, blues, jazz, etc. This is a long habit...

Re: Has anyone read the book "The Wrecking Crew"?

Bermuda- thanks for pointing out there are 2 books with a similar title.
I read Hartman's "Wrecking Crew" last summer, but didn't realize there was a 2nd book with Hal's name in the title. I'm...

Re: Drummers you thought sucked,but...

Henley is indeed a groove wizard for The Eagles' songs.
I often listen and play the game of 'what would I play' in a particular transition or fill. I always lose that game :)
If I think there...

Re: Drummers you thought sucked,but...

[quote=barryabko;1331741]Just to clarify: The drummer on almost all of the Carpenters' studio tracks was the great Hal Blaine.

Yes- this is so well known now and documented. For years, I thought...

Re: Jazz and Matched Grip

Many great drummers can switch grips during songs, like the switch from sticks to brushes or back from cross-sticking.
I will sometimes switch from matched to traditional during certain songs if...

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

Agreed!
Henley is always fun to listen to, simplicity with a sense of well placed musicality to his beats. Reminds me you don't have to fill in all the time or play too many notes/too fast.

Re: hands getting beat up

You might want to consider lightly coating the sticks with Zildjian cymbal wax or a similar product. If you use this when you first start warming up, the grip will be easier on your hands and the...

+1.
For rudiments and stick techniques, I haven't found anyone clearer, easier to follow but [more than] sufficiently detailed like Bill Bachman.

His online lessons are very interactive, fun...

Re: Kickport, does it really make a difference??

Kickport now makes a reso bass drum head with a kickport already installed in an ebony Remo PS3. This is less expensive than buying the kickport and resonant head separately.

Based on my...
