Re: College- What do i do!! :(

Commuting is just a cleverly disguised part-time job. A penny saved truly is not different from a penny earned. Take the cost of room and board, subtract the cost of driving, and divide by the time...

Re: College- What do i do!! :(

You really only have three choices.

1. Give up.
2. Find a way to afford it.
3. Find a way that you can afford.

Talk with your mom. Talk with teachers and counselors at the high school....

Re: Drums in checked baggage?

Call or visit Fedex, UPS, DHL, or other shippers and ask them. Those companies are all in the business of solving precisely this type of problem. UPS lets me redirect shipments addressed to my house...

Re: What's YOUR favorite rudiment?

Just one? These are my favorites:

4. Any 16th-note based rudiment started on the 'e' or the 'ah'
3. Any triplet based rudiment played as 16th notes
2. Any 16th-note base rudiment played as...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Slash cymbals are almost useless. But when they're useful, there is absolutely no substitution.

Re: At what point do you speed up exercises?

My approach is slightly different depending on whether it's a raw technical exercise, a part for a specific song, or something in between.

For a raw technical exercise, I like to have a specific...

Re: Jazz band or percussion ensemble?

I would go with percussion ensemble. There are still plenty of opportunities to play jazz outside of school, but relatively few for percussion ensemble. Percussion ensemble in general is a lot of...

Re: Big Band Rock, what happened?

I think you need to read some history about rock and roll if you believe this. The exact origins are debatable, but I assure you that rock was not created by a business man wearing a suit in a tall...

Re: Picking a wedding band as a musician = pain!

I helped find a band for my brother's wedding. In general, look for the best band regardless of style. That's not to say you completely ignore style. If you're looking for heavy metal and the best...

Re: Is a pop/folk/indie-song ever better without a fitting drumbeat?

Personally, I prefer the sound of a drummer without a pop/folk/indie singer/songwriter.

If every song had some kind of drum or percussive beat, what would be interesting about songs that have a...

Re: College to study drum set and something else

Most 4-year colleges will have a music department. And most music departments at 4-year colleges brag about how many non music majors they have playing in ensembles. So finding a school that lets you...

Re: "Nobody cares about the drummer, except for the Rush guy."

We're 20 post into a thread about a member of the band going unnoticed and nobody has even mentioned the bass player yet.

Re: Theater gig again...

I played Bat Boy in college. There's a pretty good range of fun music in it. The best part might be the 70's porn music to accompany the cast dressed as animals pantomiming sex with each other.

Re: Intermediate Marimba Music

Thanks everybody. Those are all good ideas. As for the style, I'm hoping for one of each. Classical has some interesting music and is a good all-around challenge to play. I also like the newer pieces...

Intermediate Marimba Music

This isn't a drum question, but I know there are plenty of all-around percussionists on here, too. I recently bought a marimba (4.3 octave low A), and I'm looking for music to play on it. After...

Re: Is it considered anal to spend tons of time working out what drum to use for certain parts?

There's a happy middle ground. If you have 16", 17", and 18" A Custom, AAX Stage, and Paiste 2002 and you obsess over exactly which one is perfect for every crash in every song then it's excessive....

Re: What's an accent? Which pieces of the kit?

Are you sure "AC" means accent? Maybe it's actually short for something else. Do you have a key for the abbreviations? Most of the rest look like acronyms and abbreviations for actual instruments...

Re: Can a mediocre drummer be a good teacher?

For a few years, I was a percussion instructor for a high school marching band. Before a rehearsal, one of my students came up to me. She said, "I'm having trouble figuring out how this rhythm goes....

Re: Music and mathematics

I just read a fascinating book on the subject. I wish I could remember the name; I just stumbled upon it while browsing for books on the history of mathematics at my local library.

Re: am i the only one who doesn't like pearl?

The high end Pearl kits I've played and heard have always sounded fine. But every middle school and many high schools have a beat-up Pearl Forum with dented pinstripe heads on the toms. The bass...

Re: I can only play original music?

This is exactly what I was going to say. I was assessing my own abilities, and realized that I have precisely this problem on the drum set. I have learned to play countless piano, battery, and...

Re: Flutes and Clarinets in Jazz Band?

While we're on the subject, let's show some respect to the pansy. A few years ago, I went to visit my parents in Minnesota for Christmas. It could not have been more than 20 degrees Fahrenheit...

Re: Does this sound right?

This isn't unique to music gear and I don't think it's always a mistake. Quite often at the grocery store, I notice that the bulk size actually has a higher per-unit cost than the regular size. I'm...

Re: Marketing Drums to Individuality

In other words, the drum set with bass, snare, hi-hat, toms, crash, and a ride is the most widely played form of percussion because of a vast marketing conspiracy perpetuated by Ludwig, Musicians...
