Re: How do artists get royalties from radio?

That's incorrect-- fees are paid to performance rights organizations like ASCAP and BMI, which then pay royalties directly to the artists they represent-- composers and lyricists, not...

Re: Buying drums without hearing them first

It never really occurred to me to play a drum before buying it. Maybe I played somebody else's drums of the same model once, or I just knew they were going to be good-- or good enough, at least. But...

Re: Describe the SONOR Sound Please...

First time I played some Phonics I recognized that punchy, Joey Baron-type sound (https://youtu.be/diJMIaTuNJQ) and had to get some. Tuned higher they have a unique thing going that I don't know how...

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

I'm not that wild about it. The jazz section is ok for advanced jazz students. The rest of it is good for people who are practicing a lot-- or who have practiced a lot-- and therefore have time to...

Re: Default Flams/triplets/quads - left hand first?

They do take different approaches-- concert percussionists to tend to play flams and ruffs right handed for consistency. But they sure practice left handed flams, even if they don't play them on the...

Re: Drumming Patterns: The Components of Rhythm & Technique

That'll take some time to digest just the free download. It looks like a pretty intense library of materials for very committed practicers-- maybe not what I'd recommend for casual use. It would...

Re: Stick Control:New old practice method

No-- it's just about having good control and a clean stroke, and being able to accurately judge your heights, so you can maintain an even sound and volume. The point of the level system is that you...

Re: Stick Control:New old practice method

Just pointing out that this doesn't directly address a major cause of unevenness between hands-- that I see with my students, at least. It doesn't do much good to have the sticks at the same height...

Re: Stick Control:New old practice method

That's rough duty. He's obviously very knowledgeable, but I'm confused that he's talking about even heights, while his heights are all over the place. Different tolerances I guess. It's also strange...

Re: Drumeo's "Best Beginner Drum Book"

I like that he claims to have trademarked the phrases "drummer's buying guide" and "musical drummer" and "note values made easy" and some other ordinary phrases. Looking at the video ad I see he...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Japanese band called Boris (https://youtu.be/Wj3EFzNwhxM). First new rock act I've liked in a long time.

Re: Political music

The only problem with it is that most overtly political music isn't very good. There are exceptions:

Woody Guthrie, covered by Billy Bragg - All You Fascists (https://youtu.be/wyjNRmSPVMM) ...

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

I was talking with the OP Ben on the phone about this, and wrote up some of what we talked about (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2019/04/practice-tips-for-drummers-with-limited.html) in a blog post.

Re: Building up my weaker limbs...

I've seen so many right handed beginners who automatically start pieces or exercises with either hand, that I consider it to be normal. I can't recall teaching any beginner as dominated by their...

Re: Building up my weaker limbs...

Sounds like all your limbs are going to be pretty weak if you haven't played in ten years. I don't believe in "weak" limbs/sides in the first place. There's just what you practice and what you don't....

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

Yeah. I would at least be doing it on the drum set. RH on cymbal + bass drum, LH on snare. Playing with a record or practice loop (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/search/label/practice%20loops),...

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

You have to decide what's really essential-- a lot of topics popular online are kind of useless in the real world. Other things you can combine. The drumset applications of the book Syncopation...

Re: Light touch?

I don't know what you sound like, who your teacher is, or what he's trying to get you to do by telling you that, so who knows what's really going on here? Maybe don't assume that he only wants you to...

Re: Drumming for a living

It's expensive to live anywhere. Do some homework on the more affordable medium size cities, and see if you can find evidence of any kind of scene there.

There really is no job of being a full...

Re: Double Shuffle - Arms, Wrists, Fingers

Just learn to put an upstroke with your wrist (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2011/10/shuffle-strategies.html) on the little note before the 2/4. It's super easy and works at any volume.

Re: Rudiments.....How fast??

Haskell Harr (book 2 especially) is also good. That Wilcoxon drum method I mentioned is great, but heavily marked up with his technical notes-- but if you ignore everything that looks weird and just...

Re: Rudiments.....How fast??

Can't tell if you're trolling or what, but this is all bad information. Obviously those are single strokes, not double strokes. That site uses kind of an antiquated definition of roll, to mean any...

Re: Rudiments.....How fast??

You'll probably want to get a teacher with any of them. Maybe the Porcaro book would be best.

Thanks for sharing the link-- I forgot I wrote that.
