Re: Portnoy out...

Just because you look like you’re rich doesn’t mean you are.

That's why credit is so popular.

And in fairness, it’s not just famous people either. You’ve probably seen some suit drive past you...

Re: another topic on the value of music

Well said. I agree, and it's why I think people who call the masses ďsheepleĒ for their ďcommonĒ tastes sound a bit hypocritical, when for all they know, they are equally swayed by the sensibilities...

Re: another topic on the value of music

Well, let's not misrepresent my stance: I never said one should only listen to the music and ignore the context but I completely agree with the gist of your post hence, why I probed the evaluation...

Re: another topic on the value of music

Thatís fine Todd, like I said earlier, youíre not obligated to reply and if you have indeed lost interest, thatís fair enough. Thanks for your initial input.

Re: piracy ; worse case senario...

Of course, illegal and immoral are not synonymous. Some child porn activities involved copying files too, that doesnít mean possession isnít a serious crime. I know what you mean though. The moguls...

Re: piracy ; worse case senario...

Essential liberty? Define ďessentialĒ? And already, weíre in the thick of it.

To be honest, Iím not really pushed on getting into it here, because it would really go off topic, and Iím no...

Re: another topic on the value of music

Todd, it’s an Internet discussion board, not a televised university debate. I'm not being smart here but look around you: there’s “wanking” off all kinds on this message board. That’s why people...

Re: piracy ; worse case senario...

I certainly don't hope so either but Reading Lessig's Code 2.0 was eye-opening. He's the founder of Creative Commons, so agrees intellectual property laws are outdated and creativity is being...

Re: piracy ; worse case senario...

The pirates seem to have won, in a sense that lots of young people will help themselves to music regardless of ethics and protests from outraged musicians. Some might go down to the music store and...

Re: another topic on the value of music

OK, but does that then make taste superior, and something one has to educate themselves on? Maybe I’m opening a can of worms asking that question...

Even still, wine buffs who reckon they know...

Re: another topic on the value of music

For the same reason that if it was a famous pop star busking at that Subway, more people would have noticed because they possess more status. Self-starter musicians don’t have that kind of social...

Re: another topic on the value of music

True enough, but even when up and coming bands are performing for a specific group, marketing their wares to an intended audience, isn’t it true that their status is more akin to that of a street...

Re: another topic on the value of music

Now you're talking :-)

The experiment has its faults, and we can't draw any hard conclusions, but it's a valid metaphor for the plight of many musicians today, no?

Indeed, 'packaging' certainly...

Re: another topic on the value of music

If that were true then how come they make announcements in subways, put up adverts and people pass out flyers? If they really thought people weren't paying attention, this would be futile, right?

Re: another topic on the value of music

But thatís the whole point of the experiment. Obviously, the results would be different if you put a famous personality in the subway, so what does that tell us about how hard it is being an...

Re: another topic on the value of music

That's it. The "framing" of the musical context influences people's appreciation. We donít expect to hear a world renowned musician on the street, so we might not pay much attention, even though we...

another topic on the value of music

Going forwards from the piracy topic, Iím in the middle of writing, so this post isnít quite 100% coherent but Iíll share for now and see what others think:

In 2007, Joshua Bell, one of the...

Re: Great musicianship = Limited access?

I hear ya. Much of what passes for mass entertainment bores me too but is that because I've heard alot of it before? No doubt when I was younger there were musicians who would have said the same...

Re: Great musicianship = Limited access?

I’m not contesting your right to object to the tastes of mass society, but all it amounts to is subjective taste and I think you’re trying to apply artistic sentiment to mass entertainment, which is...

Re: Great musicianship = Limited access?

Right, STIMULATE demand, but weíre not talking thought-control here. The AD-MEN do plant suggestions and try and influence matters but they could care less what the product is, so long as it just...

Re: Great musicianship = Limited access?

I agree to an extent. Yes, the mass media will try to push things on people, but they will only push things that people like. People tend to confuse mass consumerism with conformity; a cog in the...

Re: Great musicianship = Limited access?

In fairness, it was a stereotype. Look at all the Hollywood millionaires, who have bowling alleys in their living rooms! I very much doubt such people are listening to Swan Lake or Pictures at an...
