Re: Acrylic snare? Any good?

I've got a little 10 inch acrylic snare, so not similar size-wise, but it's extremely loud compared to my wood and metal snares.

Re: Bass vs. drums challenge video - released here first :)

That looks like so much fun!

Great variety of sounds from the 3 kits.

Yolanda sounds excellent! (The smidgen of Mark King influence totally works for me too.)

Re: Soloing question

Check out some serious soloists like Thomas Lang. He seems to approach soloing conceptually like you're describing: have a bunch of themes/sections you want to move through. Check out how he moves...

Re: Question about loops

"Dreams" being an older track, it would have been an actual physical loop of magnetic tape. The concept is pretty straight forward: just take your source tape, which is probably the drums playing...

Re: First use of a click

Apparently Carl Stalling invented the click track. He's the guy who wrote all that insanely complicated music for the great old Warner Bros cartoons (Bugs Bunny etc.)

Re: Sensitive drummer?

Ah, the joy of validation that you can fake your way through a gig! Feels great, doesn't it?

Congrats, and pat yourself on the back for that one.

Re: Could have been awkward ...

Go for it!

Maybe subtly get an idea of any possible ageism first.

And how would he even know you're related to your daughters? And even if he did, he might not care, or he might think it's...

Re: Better than the original??.....Noooooo!!!!!!

Sounds like he was just trying to wind you up. I can't imagine any sober, respectable musician saying that sort of thing without tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Re: Drum Shell History Questions

Except sometimes you can indeed tell, even on supposedly "best ply drums." In the mid-early 1980s I bought a new 10 inch tom to expand my early-early 1980s Gretsch kit, and it's obvious by looking...

Re: Staccato snare drum 7x14

I've got an old Staccato kit. The snare is probably that size. I like my batter heads tight, but when I cranked up the tension on the Staccato snare the top of the shell actually bent inwards all...

Re: Drums and allergies

Allergies are completely mysterious. Nobody knows how to prevent them. Allergy shots don’t work. Modern medicine has failed on this problem.

Benadryl (the actual drug is diphenhydramine) is...

Just go for it, man!

Iíve tried it a few times. The basics (speed up hands while slowing down feet and vice versa) arenít that hard; itís doing it smoothly and evenly that gets pretty tricky.

Re: thomas lang double stroke speed up/slow down

I’ve seen him do that, er, trick? effect? display? on a view vids. It’s nothing special, pattern-wise: he’s just doing singles with his hands and singles with his feet. (Or is it doubles? I can't...

Re: How are YOU doing YOUR Moeller technique?

I definitely use fingers. One of my exercises for practicing Moeller is to play constant 16th notes (basically as ghost notes) on the snare with finger technique, and then use the Moeller whipping...

Re: Picking a situationally appropriate kit

I bought a whole kit just to get the 16 inch bass drum. Okay, so the kit (low-end from a big-name brand) is basically junk except for the kick, which seems to have better hardware on it than the...

Re: Hi-Hat Stepping (Lift & Close on every beat)

Practice. And then practice some more.

To start, play the money beat: 8th notes on the ride, kick on 1 and 3, and snare on 2 and 4.

Use a metronome, and go reeeeeeealy slowly as you add...

Re: Can you be a gigging drummer without a drum kit?

Yeah, what he said.

If you really only think that youíll gig every 3 or 4 months, then just rent a kit when you need it. It should be fairly cheap.

As far as storage space, you can stack...
