Check your balance... A good exercise is flat flaming. All 4 limbs striking simultaneously . start at a very slow tempo, this will reveal any balance problems.

I think Travis Orbin is breaking new ground with the setup you describe without the mounted toms. 4 piece... snare, bass, tom left, floor tom right. Two hi hats, a ride on the left couple a crashes...

Ditto ... The engineer knows how to get the sound out of the house kit. You'll most likely find the toms and bass heads tuned just to tension,very loose. The geeks like a lot of attack and quick fall...
