I was/am a big fan of portable drum kits because i giged many years 2-4 times weekly in clubs and i didnt want to carry all big stuff....my conclusion is to make tempus-like very light not wooden...

Look at ebay for used slingerland radioking or slingerland Hollywood ace 3 ply, ludwig 3 ply or leedy, gretsch , camco....
These have vintage vibe in sound and made history in 40-is,50-is, 60-is and...

I would recommend you 14 x8 brady jarrah block if your budget will allow.
I play 12x7 same jarrah block and it sounds low like some 14 snares, and i think that 14x8 should be exactly what you are...

12x7 jarrah block seems to be most used Brady snare and formula which many profesional drummers are using...

Both are great drums, i would go with Ludwig Legacy on your place, because of resale value.
Canopus is great too.
