Re: Snare for a phat sound

One of the fatest sounds I achieved was on an Acrolite, 14x5. It's all in the right head selection, and tuning. I know that some say you should detune lugs, but that causes uneven tension across the...

Re: A couple of things I'm not digging from Ludwig

I understand what you are saying about the new Ludwig throw off. I had one with a new lm-400. People are saying that you cannot re-adjust the tension with it engaged. True. The whole point is to lock...

Re: New custom concert snare!

I design what I wanted in a concert snare. I also wanted something distinctive, so I decided to design my own wrap. I searched for good images of abalone I then selected sections and put them...

New custom concert snare!

This is the new custom concert snare that I just finished. It is a 14x5 7 ply magnum Keller shell with 45 degree bearing edges. Pearl triad strainer and cables. I designed he wrap myself. It is...

Re: First new build in a while

You ask good questions! It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. This is not a typical drum set drum. It is directed at one purpose, a more concert snare sound. It compares favorably in that...

Re: First new build in a while

The magnum shells have 40% more wood per shell. They seem more resonant and just a bit "more" of what a maple shell should be. Fuller tone. A standard VSS 10 ply shell = 7 ply magnum shell.

Re: DW Deep Snare: Ordering New vs Refinishing Used?

I have wrappd a number of drums. Assuming that they sound good, You can have a new looking drum for under $30 with a wrap from bum wraps.

Re: Snare reso

If it is a real problem for you, Switch to a non-coil wire set, Like Grover snares. May not go away completely, but greatly reduced sympathetic buzz. I love them!

First new build in a while

I decided that I wanted a deeper drum set up for playing rudimental solos. So I just finished this 14x6.5 beast! It is a 7 ply Keller magnum shell with 45 degree bearing edges. Tube lugs were used,...

Re: Pearl sensitone aluminum vs Ludwig black galaxy both 14x6.5

I have owned and played both the Sensitones and Acros. Like them both. I give he edge to the Acrolite, just a bit "meatier" tone, and I just like 8 lugs better. Wouldn't kick about either though.

Re: What type of heads do you like with die cast hoops?

Good question! Consider that concert snares use Die Cast almost exclusively. Those snares usually have Diplomat weight heads, coated or Renn. type. The reason is to control overtones and yet have...

Radio King would be my pick. One of the best of all time, and it excels at whatever you would use it for.

I can't beleive I bought another one. . .

I can't believe that I found myself buying another Acrolite off of Ebay yesterday! I have had 4 or 5 of them, and have sold them all in favor of "prestige" drums. I always find myself regretting it,...
