Re: An Open Apology

The downside to moderating this forum. Not something I’d wanna wake up to every few days.

Thanks for doing what you do, Mr. GruntD

Re: Bass drum mic picking up Toms

I’m gonna take a guess: there was agressive compression with too much post-compression gain on the OH signals.

When the audio signal is compressed, the peak levels are lowered (i.e., compressed)....

Re: Getting ready to rock Oakland Coliseum...

Excellent!

How’d it go? Any good snacks? Did the cheerleaders dance to your amazing beats?

Re: GOOD Craigslist stories?

Years ago (decades?) I had some Apple Mac computers and monitors. When I upgraded to their newer models, the older gear was not compatible (PowerPC chipset to Intel chipset). I figured no one would...

Re: How do I tell my friend that his expensive custom handmade snare is shit?

If he doesn't hear what you hear, or agree with what you hear, that snare is not going anywhere.

In many crafts & disciplines, when one buys an expensive tool and/or instrument, one's strong...

Re: Counting off the song w/banter

I’m surprised by the split in opinions. Anything beyond “how y’all doing” and “thank you” is amateur. It’s the sign of a bad wedding band and/or a narcissist with a mic.

While playing in One of...

Re: So that didn't end well

^ This is the first red flag, and really the only one needed to cancel the meet-up.

Out here on the Möbius Strip, when a stranger wants to join a rehearsal and/or band, we ask for references. Even...

Re: Before and after!

Much better! Now you have a signature look.

I’ve never liked the look of metal hoops with an inlay, and I really dislike how kick pedals feel when attached to them.

Re: Deep bass drums

Perhaps, or maybe it’s for versatility. I can adjust tension and internal muffling to get sounds from a very tight punch to a resonant boom. And it’s hard to imagine drum designers ditching acoustics...

Re: Deep bass drums

Great analysis! Thanks! I never considered pedal response under speed-playing conditions.

I’ve only owned 22x16 (birch) & 22x18 (bubinga).

The 18” kick slays in a live setting, without any...

Re: Sold my SCP B/B's, looking again.... sorry.

I'm surprised you sold these drums. They highly valued nowadays. In addition, Tama's hardware is very adaptable, and can be easily found at stores when a piece goes missing.

For me, loud comes...

Re: remembering a tune

This happened to me frequently. I began to memorize the part of the tune that hooked me (e.g., the intro, chorus, a memorable lyric, etc.). I did this with careful, repetitive listening, trying to...

Re: New kit time :)

I agree. Ever since I went with a virgin kick I’ve not looked back. In addition, when I use a different set (e.g., one tom instead of two) the combo stands allow for greater setup flexibility.

Re: New kit time :)

I'm surprised Tama didn't make the cut ('cuz they're great drums with IMO the best hardware).

Re: What's actually going well for you in your world of music?

Wow! Lotsa good posts in this thread! I feel like I just had a shot of B vitamins.

Wifey & I just moved from a 120-year old house in the city to a 3-year old house 5 miles away in the countryside....

Re: Drummer’s Place In Band

“A lousy drummer can make a good band sound bad. A good drummer can make a lousy band sound great.”
~ Kenny Aronoff, drum clinic, Champaign Illinois, c.1990

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

An American instrument is not necessarily better, be it a drum shell, guitar, or french horn. However, the ability for American companies to source better woods and better refined metals is superior...

Re: Do you have a piece of equipment that you've used since day 1 and still use it regularly?

I don’t play anywhere without:

Iron Cobra Rolling Glide pedal
Tama Lever Glide hat stand
Tama ergo hydraulic throne with backrest

Without those three things, I’m not comfortable and no...

The guy who consistently blows my mind is Simon Phillips.

The guy whose style I enjoy trying to emulate is Robbie McIntosh.

Re: The 16x14 floor tom

Playing at churches for a few decades gave me the opportunity to play a wide variety of kits, from the “fusion” size (10, 12, 14x12, 20 kick) to old-school rock size (12, 13, 16x16, 18x16, 24 kick,)....

Re: The 16x14 floor tom

It's 14"x12".

I don't have an eye-candy pic with the full setup, however . . .
