Re: Craigslist ads crack me up....

I have been the bass player in bands where we auditioned drummers who were well-versed in flashy fills, press rolls, etc. but who would slow the tempo by 10 BPM by the end of the song, come out of...

Re: When soundmen attack

This is the best idea. I am going to do this with my gigging kit.

Re: Who does this, really?

I think I get where you're coming from on this.

If this particular set of drums got a small scuff or two, it wouldn't break your heart, and it's a pain to pack them up every time. More pain that...

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

This reminds me of when marthared was talking about being given condescending "advice."

I think it may be no coincidence that now that you have better chops and greater confidence, you're getting...

Re: Why do listeners move on as they get older?

Interesting thread.

I think that for many people, and I am one, music is "the soundtrack of our lives."

As my life circumstances and outlook change, so does my preferred soundtrack. More jazz...

Re: Good and bad customer service.

What country is this to which you refer?

I live in the United States, specifically Northern California, and within 45 minutes' drive from me are San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Sacramento.

Re: Judge Says Teen Drummer's Playing Isn't a Nuisance

In other words, you'd start a noise war against a teenager with a drumset.

Re: Free notation software...

I use Finale NotePad (http://www.finalemusic.com/products/finale-notepad/), which is also free.

It's not perfect, but I like it better than MuseScore. It can export MIDI files, so you are not tied...

Re: PSA - Lubricate your P85.

For the slidey bits, my preference is for a bit of white lithium grease applied with a toothpick.

And yes, the P-85 needs to stay lubed. A friend of mine was looking to replace the one on his...

Re: Joe Morello: I Couldn't Play Jo Jone's Bass Drum

Ugh, when I bought my Slingerland kit, the bass drum was packed SOLID, with a pillow and an entire sheet and pillowcase set (and the guy had been using the toms "concert style" with reso hoops long...

Re: Tuning opinion...

Oh dear, just when I get satisfied with the tuning of my toms....

I've been a cranked reso guy for a while, just trying to keep it dry. Now I want to try loosening them a bit.

At least now I've...

Re: I jammed with people I didn't know!

I recently showed up to a "bring an instrument" backyard BBQ with my "cafe kit," which I had never played before, to play with people I had mostly never met before in a style I...

Re: Ginger Baker Reacts to Passing of Jack Bruce

Yeah, I braced myself when I clicked on the topic.

Given Mr. Baker's reputation, it's almost like a Dickensian redemption.

Re: iDrumTune App

I've tried all but one of the tuning apps for iOS and Android, and iDrumTune is the one I still use.

Two features put it at the top of the class: the spectrum view, already mentioned, and the...

Re: drum tuners

I started playing drums a couple of years ago after playing bass, guitar, and keyboards for 30 years.

Each instrument kind of has its own culture, and it's been fascinating to observe the...

Re: Connecting a bass drum pedal

I've found that having the front spurs too low or too high causes this.

And it's not necessarily intuitive which way it goes. The only thing for it is to get down on the floor and adjust your...

Re: What is your opinion of this Billy Cobham review?

Looks like the age old problem of a reviewer who dislikes the genre s/he is reviewing.

He had a more pleasant experience at the show than I would have, of this I am certain, but I wouldn't presume...

Re: Hahahahahahahaha :)

Holy....this is amazing. Gives me that same dizzy feeling I get from listening to the Shaggs.

Every year my neighborhood has a block party with an open jam for all the musicians who live in the...

Re: new floating snare project

I'm pretty much with Red Menace on this one. If there were one of those makeover shows but for old musical instruments, I would be sooooo there. Especially if it were not all stuff that had...

Re: Talking salespeople down in price

If I see in the Craig's List ad "FIRM," then I won't bother them.

If the price is smokin' I won't bother to counter; they asked a low enough price and that's what they'll get from me. I don't want...

Re: The false perception of Luan

I agree that the stuff can be difficult to work due to the splintering and tear-out, but I also think that its sonic reputation is due more to it having been used to build cheap, flimsy drums.

Re: Conversion of Tom Bracket

AFAIK, a current Pearl or even cheapo knockoff imitation Pearl should replace that mount with no drilling required.

Inexpensive Asian-made drums still use this style of tom mount. I've found them...

Re: Snare for a $200 budget

Basically everything that people have suggested would serve your purpose.

Myself, the Ludwig Acrolite is my desert island snare. If I could only have one snare from my collection, which also...

Re: Tinnitus (ear ringing)

I had the custom-fit Etymotics for a long time and liked them well enough, but they are pricey and supposedly need to be refitted every couple of years, which I did not do.

Recently I got a pair...
