Re: On tom angles

One other thing to try would be to offset the two rack toms. Just set it up like you would your 4-piece kit, using just your large rack and small FT. Then add the other two toms to make it a 6-piece....

Re: Question about Yamaha Stage Custom Birch

If you set up on carpet or a rug (as you always should) and set the spurs correctly, you will get zero creep. And the tom mounts are rock solid; Yamaha makes the best hardware in the business. But if...

Re: Tom angles!!!!

This isn't really a tom angle per se, but holy crap, I've never seen a rack tom larger than the bass drum before!!!

Re: Great car for a drummer

Fortunately I've figured out how to get sports cars and big(ish) kits to play nice with each other.

Re: Subsitute to Remo Tunable Sound Shape (Remo TSS)

You could just get a marching snare with a cranked up kevlar head. That's what the tunable sound shape is emulating.

Re: First ever record you bought.

For me it was Men At Work: Business As Usual. This was back in 1981, when Who Can It Be Now? was a big hit. A few months later, my older brother borrowed Rush: Moving Pictures from a friend, and I...

Re: My day yesterday

I can't help you with positioning, but I can provide a few pointers on the tuning. First step is to set each drum you want to tune on a carpeted floor, since that will make the overtones much more...

Re: Premier XPK and hello!

Welcome, and nice kit! I used to own an XPK back in the late 90s, it was a great kit for the price and I'm sure yours is too.

However I have to agree with Les here. I don't think he (or anyone...

Re: Perhaps a drumset for my actual physical size?

I have two 6-piece kits, one I use in my studio and one for gigging. The studio kit has a 20" kick with 8x10 & 8x12 toms, and my gigging kit has a 22" kick with 8x10 & 9x12 toms (in both cases, the...

Re: How do drummers on YouTube have so many popular songs with the drums removed?

I don't know how many drummers use this, but there's an iPhone app called Jammit that lets you download songs with an instrument removed (guitar, bass, drums, keys or vocals). And these are the...

Re: Zero Head Tension for Snare batter

If you're really concerned about volume levels, you can put on a Remo SilentStroke head and crank it up as much as you want. As long as the snare is mic'ed at the gig, you can have the sound guy pump...

Re: Nesting a regular kit

Does anyone in your band have a car, or are all of you riding public transport? The reason I'm asking is because if someone in the band has a car and has the room, you could buy a 2nd kit to leave...

Re: Happy Birthday Talia Wilkenfeld

I think that was the after-party.

BTW hopefully someone will post a video of them covering The Smith's "How Soon is Now". Truly amazing.

Re: Happy Birthday Talia Wilkenfeld

Just got back from seeing Tal's show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. In addition to putting on a great show and having a great drummer in her band (Tamir Barzilay), during the encore Vinnie...

Re: How Good Are The Mapex Meridians?

Not really a Mapex guy so I can't compare them to their current line-up, but I have played a Meridian Maple and was thoroughly impressed. Very deep, rich tones that sound like a much more expensive...

Re: Wearing watches while drumming

I'm a bit of a watch guy myself, and almost feel naked when I'm not wearing one. That said, I never wear my nicer watches while playing, if for no other reason than it feels too heavy/cumbersome. So...

Re: Drumming do's and don'ts

DO: learn about head selection and how to tune your drums to achieve the sound you're looking for.
DON'T: forget to tune all your drums BEFORE heading out to the gig/rehearsal.

DO: spend as much...

Re: Music/Drum Things to do in LA

Mid city is just a section of LA, between Miracle Mile and Koreatown. And yes, traffic can be quite bad at times, but it's not at a standstill all day. Though if it's even remotely near rush hour or...

Re: Anyone actually PREFER long lugs?

It's funny you compared your Exports to a Corolla. A few years ago I started a thread where I compared all the major drum brands to car brands, and -- you guessed it -- I equated Pearl as the Toyota...

Re: Replacing bass drum lugs from one vintage with another?

As long as the hole spacing matches (or if you don't mind doing a little drilling), any bass drum lug will work. If it's a tom lug with the same spacing, I imagine it would also work. Note that bass...

Re: LA dwellers. What's good near Beverly/Alvarado?

They're good! I actually first had them when I was visiting Seoul in 2012. They had a lobster pizza that knocked my socks off. After I got back to LA, I saw one as I was driving through Koreatown and...

Re: LA dwellers. What's good near Beverly/Alvarado?

I was about to suggest you try the #19 pastrami on rye at Langer's Deli until I saw that you don't eat meat. But considering I'm on the far west side and am a confirmed meat-aholic, I don't know of...

Re: Good Jazz kit around $1500

Right now there's a brand new Gretsch Brooklyn on eBay in those sizes (12/14/18) and in a satin natural finish that's going for $1865 + free shipping. That's a little more than $1500, but still in...
