I picked up a Yamaha Oak Custom 5 piece shell pack in 2010 for $1210.00 ...and thought I had gotten a heck of a bargain but $1000 sure is a bargain; The Oak Customs are just simply the best sounding...

The advice about the Krylon spray paint sounds like a reasonable choice. Another idea is to go talk to a body shop...ask them what paint they use when painting plastics and ask if they use a primer...

While on break, I always lightly tap about an inch from each tuning lug ...I slightly muffle the center of the drum head so i can hear the harmonic ring a bit better and make sure i get the same tone...

IMHO...the Pearl Export look good and its a 5 piece and at the price...hard to beat. Course, youre going to have to drop some coins for stands and cymbals...does Guitar Center have any used cymbals...

As a current owner of the Yamaha Oak Customs, I would recommend these for a working drummer, especially one who does a lot of live gigs and or studio gigs. I put Aquarian Focus-X coated batter heads...
