Re: 40th Anniversary of Physical Graffiti - How Cool Is This?

The re-mastered version sounds incredible 40 years on.

I've just bought it for the umpteenth time: vinyl, cassette, cd, box set, etc...

For us drummers, listen to the pre-digital, true...

Re: THE AMBIDEXTROUS THREAD

Like a few others, I write left-handed but drum right-handed after initially watching drummers on TV and copying them as a kid.

Sometimes I'll use my left hand to pay hi-hat - and use it a lot for...

Re: Billy Cobham's Stratus fill stickings?

Yes, I've tried hertas with the playalong, but cannot fit them in anywhere near quick enough for the tempo of the track.

But interesting. I shall persevere. Thanks

Billy Cobham's Stratus fill stickings?

Hi,

Does anyone know the stickings of the fast fill flurries that Billy Cobham employs in the track Stratus?

Is it 32nd note singles - or is it his famous herta (but played very quickly?)

Re: Todd Sucherman here!

Hi Todd,

I've been working on my own version (for what it's worth!) of your Thank You Mr Smith.

However, I have to go flat out on my bass drum pedals to get the required speed, making it sound...

Anyone else play The Drum Also Waltzes?

I first came across Neil Peart's version, then dug around and found it had been done by people like Steve Smith, Bill Brufford, and originally of course by Max Roach.

I've just started practising...

Re: Drummers who have influenced you

When I started as a kid:

(Mainly mid-70s UK glam rock beats, usually tom-based shuffle grooves)
The Glitter Band
Slade

Sweet
Suzi Quatro!

Re: "Rosana shuffle" how long did it take?

For me, it's a work in progress.

Once I worked the mechanics out, I tried to get the best possible 'feel'.

Every time I practice, I'll try the Rosana shuffle, along with the Bonham 'Fool In The...

Re: complicated blues songs.

Some of Jeff Beck's albums over the years have blues-based material that is more technically challenging.

Albums like There And Back and Blow By Blow have songs in odd times.

Also listen to...

Re: What is your favorite fill based on a rudiment?

A nice Bonham/Gadd-type sextuplet fill based on a ratamacue is:

KRLRLL KRLRLL KRLRLL KRLRLL

That's the bass drum, followed by three notes on the toms, and two lefts on the snare.

There are...

Anybody use a drum tuner?

Does anybody use one of these drum-tuning gadgets that are appearing on the market?

I've played for many years and always (hopefully) managed to get a good sound out of my kits.

However, this...

Re: Purdie Shuffle

On the 2005 MD Festival DVD, the drummer Zoro presents a whole section on the half-time shuffle.

He looks at Purdie, John Bonham, Jeff Porcaro - and other variations.

Re: Daniel Glass The Century Project

Yes, Daniel Glass had a slot on a recent Modern Drummer festival DVD, performing a clinic about the evolution of the shuffle.

I enjoyed it, but it was very reminiscent of Steve Smith's concept...

Top 10 drummers you've seen in the flesh?

I was thinking of some of the great players I'd seen live (and one or two I'd wish I'd seen)

In no particular order:

Neil Peart
Dennis Chambers
Billy Cobham
Jojo Mayer
Aaron Spears
Vinnie...

Re: Must own dvds for someone who has played for a long time but relatively new to drum set?

I've got a shelf full of drum DVDs.

Some are better than others.

I've found Methods and Mechanics I and II by Todd Sucherman really useful for practical advice.

His section on applying...

Re: Hardest Led Zep song on drums and why

Some of Bonham's drumming sounds quite easy - until you try to play it!

Some of his most challenging songs (for me) are Good Times Bad Times (I need a double pedal), The Crunge and Fool In The...

Re: Wedding/Function Band Do's and Don't's

1. Yes, get paid in advance - as somebody mentioned earlier.

We got stung a couple a weeks ago when the groom 'ran out of money.'

We got paid a week later, but certainly not an ideal situation...

And yes, it looks hard

Re: John Bonham R.I.P.

My first drum hero.

As the years go by, it becomes increasingly clear how he was many years ahead of his time.

I saw an interview with his son Jason recently who revealed Bonham Snr was 16 when...

Re: Gavin Harrison here!

Hi Gavin,

As a 'master of beat manipulation', I'd be keen on some advice from you on five-note groupings.

The latest Rythmn magazine has a nice linear fill exercise where a group of 32 16th...

Re: Bill Bruford The Autobiography

I recommend the Stewart Copeland book.

Very enjoyable and laugh-out-loud in many places.

He is an excellent writer (as well as being - as we all know - a fantastic drummer).

15 for tickets to Aaron Spears UK clinic

I wondered if fellow UK drummers felt 15 was a bit steep for a clinic, (despite the obvious logisital and cost implications of getting Aaron over from America).

Having a day job, I've got no...

Steve Smith - an awesome jazz drummer, and just an awesome drummer all-round - uses a double pedal on some of his jazz work.

Check out his two DVDs from the 2000s...

Re: Drumming fashion what happened to pshp pshp pshp?

Yeah, I still use high-hat barks a lot.

The hats are maybe my favourite voice on the kit - and provide so much colour and light and shade possibilities

Not a big fan of just chipping away at...
