Re: Andy inspired me to demo some of my snare drums.

Friggin' wonderful, man. Super-relaxed and flowing. Looks and sounds effortless.

Re: "So What" .... dig this

Man, I've never seen this one before. After a couple years of nothing new, suddenly some new stuff from this froup has started surfacing. Thanks for sharing, man. This is moving performance.

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Speaking of...

Last night, I got to witness the great Wayne Shorter Quartet. I'm not a spiritual man, but it was a spiritual experience. Wayne can really still play. And I have to admit, I got a...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Yeah!

So guess who I'm seeing live with his quartet tomorrow night?

Yes, Wayne Shorter Quartet at DSO Orchestra Hall. I'm fired up for this one. It will be my first time seeing Wayne and this...

Re: Peart - would you hang out with him?

That is fantastic!

I didn't miss the part where Neil casually mentions in passing a psycho-stalker who threatened violence against him.

Neil is a really good writer—whether in the realm of...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I feel like this album doesn't get its due in discussions about the Wayne Shorter discography. It probably has something to do with being recorded in 1965 but not released until 1979.

It's right...

Re: Peart - would you hang out with him?

When I was a kid, Neil was my idol. I would have killed to meet him. I probably would have fit the "drooling sycophant" label at that time.

Today? Of course I would. I would be honored. I don't...

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

Jazz Cafe at Music Hall in Detroit is the venue. Impossibly beautiful place. Very intimate.

Re: Toms on the Backbeat

Here's a question: What do you call it?

There has to be a name for that beat.

Another example is La Bamba, as done by Los Lobos.

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

Yep, it's the Spectrum 40 band. That means Gary Husband, who contributes to Drummerworld quite often, will be there, too!

I saw Gary on drums with Allan Holdsworth many years ago and it was one of...

I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

I've led a pretty charmed musical existence, getting to see most of my heroes play live at one time or another. But I've never seen Billy Cobham perform live, one of my great regrets up until now.

Re: How Does Your Band Set Up on Stage?

Nope, I'm a righty, which means it makes no sense at all, right? Hey, I never said I was logical. I guess I'm just used to it and I feel like that's where I want the bass player to be. Maybe it comes...

Re: How Does Your Band Set Up on Stage?

We set up according to the stage layout and size. Mostly, it's a straight line in front of me.

One thing: I'm a creature of habit, and I like having the bass player to my right. And it's not like...

Re: Kinda' ok with slowing down

I went through my slowing-down years back when I did have a wife and young child. Now, I'm wanting to play more than ever. So I can't relate right now, but I've gone through a period where I didn't...

Re: Other songs that sound like other songs

Born This Way by Lady Gaga and Respect Yourself by Madonna. I think Madonna actually performed a mashup of the two to make a point.

Heart's Barracuda and Led Zep's Achilles Last Stand.

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

Bermuda, probably nobody is more familiar with the nuances of music copyrighting than you. In your opinion, was Stay With Me a more or less obvious derivative than Blurred Lines?

My two-bit...

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

People bitch about Spotify, but they pay out pretty well for huge hit songs. YouTube and Pandora do not, that's a different thing. The problem is when you're a local artist with a local audience and...

Re: Rim shots- how to practice precision?

The mind-blowing revelation from the Ed Soph clip: Cobham recorded Inner Mounting Flame on a four-piece Gretsch. That got me searching and apparently it was an 18" bass drum. I've been listening to...

Re: Fantastic Peter Erskine video

My jaw is on the floor. Not often that happens when I watch a 10-minute interview of a drummer on the web. Thanks for sharing, Ants. I passed this along to my friends in music education.

Re: Is live music dead?

Agreed that clubs are about DJs. But I still can see live music any night of the week for a short drive. Most of what I'm hearing lately is that live music is experiencing a bit of a renaissance....
