Re: What happened to marching snares?

Re: Irony?

I'm pretty glad that this doesn't happen when it comes to cymbals, though- a lot of my favorite cymbals (or at least some of the most interesting to me, especially in Meinl's catalog) are signature...

Re: Pearl VBL vs Tama Superstar Hyperdrive

Re: Irony?

Hoo boy, we have fun here! :)

My signature snare would be 2 plies of a lightweight fibrous material wrapped very tightly around themselves with an extra-hard "projection boosting" cylinder in the...

Re: Irony?

well, irony isn't coincidence. that'd be ironic considering specifically that flying is the safest way to travel, but that's not in the forefront of most people's minds when they think about flying....

Re: Irony?

Absolutely, but also- not everybody with a lot of money to spend on drums is a high-end, highly skilled player :) Maybe there should be an audition process for the right to get sold a signature Simon...

Re: Irony?

"a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result"

one would expect high-profile artists' products to have high-profile...

Re: Irony?

The irony is that these top-level artists' "signature drums" aren't really that top-level. Some are actually artist specified drums that they use (Mike Portnoy, Simon Phillips, etc.), some are...

Re: It's the room not the kit !

According to a recent MD, Simon Phillips brings plywood or something to put under his drums at every gig. (of course this is as far as i remember)

Re: Movies that Feature Drumming

Y'all need to check out "Sound of Noise", it's a German absurdist film about percussionists breaking the law & has a lot of hilarious moments. It's on Netflix Instant right now. GO.

Re: Pearl VBL vs Tama Superstar Hyperdrive

The Silverstars are the same shells as the Superstar, only different sizes and with different lugs/hoops. I had a Superstar and personally I think lower mass hardware & 2.3mm hoops (which the...

Re: Natural Resonance Tuning Point For A Snare?

Yup.

As an addendum, I've never had a batter head tighter than a reso on a snare, but I don't own a Drumdial so I don't know how those numbers usually look. Make sure your snare wires are centered...

Re: New Mapex Falcon or used Pearl Demon Drive?

There are plenty of differences... the Falcons have three different drive types and a longboard-ish design, while the Demon Drives are only direct drive (unless the one you're talking about is the...

Re: Hi hats and air lock, no luck.

Yeah, I think having the vents/holes might do less to alleviate this than some think. Not sure though.

Re: Hi hats and air lock, no luck.

Can't say I've ever this issue with even my totally virgin pairs of hats (i.e. undrilled at all) at a decent tilt. Maybe the stand...?

Re: Custom Kit Advice - Mixing Wood

Andy (KIS) is right, and they make more than stave shells. Ply shells are just much less likely to be massively affected by wood species and layout than solid instruments; the resultant sound is...
