Re: Pearl Crystal Beat Drums

I agree with this. It's a shame the acrylics crack so much. I've always loved their look and sound.

Re: What are your favourite recorded drumsounds?

I've always loved the sound of Neil Peart's second set of Slingerlands, which he used on A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres.

Re: Scorpions Fans

Seeing Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker was cool, too. Sorry, I play guitar also.

Re: Should be a jazz fusion classic

I agree with what Wavelength said. I remember borrowing albums like this from the library in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Good stuff.

Re: Yamaha dd65 - comfortable enough to play?

I believe it can, although I've never done it and can't comment on how well it sounds.

Re: Yamaha dd65 - comfortable enough to play?

I own one and find it comfortable enough to play. The movements of your arms are essentially the same as on a normal kit, but with a condensed range of movement. The buttons for the kick and hi-hat...

Re: Steambent solid walnut snare

That's a beautiful drum. I usually don't like drums with stripes in the finish, but that one is very tasteful.

Both the youtube videos sound nice, too.

Re: Why do folks use "handles" on a musician forum instead of their real name?

The Witness Protection Plan people told me it would be better for me not to use my real name.

Thanks,
Kevin McGuire (oh wait, doh!)

Re: Mickey Dolenz, open handed player?

No offense, but within the context of this thread and the other comments that had already been made, your calling him an actor without mentioning his drumming did give me the impression you were...

Re: Mickey Dolenz, open handed player?

Right, but after being cast in the Monkees TV show and learning to play drums he was an actor/singer/drummer. None of us knew how to play until we learned how to play. The fact that he learned to...

Re: Mickey Dolenz, open handed player?

Oh yeah, I read that Mickey Dolenz was right-handed, but the drumming instructor he worked with was left-handed (or vice versa), and that is why he developed an unorthodox playing style. Kind of...

Omar Hakim? No.

Joe Morello? No.

A legitimate drummer playing in front of an audience? Yes.

Re: Can we start a list of well-known studio recordings that have sloppy drumming in them?

I hear that every time I listen to that song. I always thought it sounded like he hit his sticks together and that it was intentional. The volume and strength of the attack don't sound like an...

Re: Can we start a list of well-known studio recordings that have sloppy drumming in them?

Bingo. In the words of Rod Stewart: There's nothing more boring than a perfect album. Funny how drummers get too wrapped up in how perfect a drum part is. That's anal. How well a drum part fits...

Drummers Who Write Songs

I'm listening to Little Steven's Underground Garage while I'm on the internet, and he just played a song that the drummer in a band wrote. He made a joke that drummers can write songs, you just...

Re: Hey look, a distraction

Good post, maybe the best thing to do is get our girlfriends/wives and kids playing guitars and basses and get some family bands going. I know I wanted to play with Laurie Partridge when I was 12. ...

Re: Hey look, a distraction

An older drummer friend of mine gave me a gentle warning not to waste my life practicing... he knows that I try to get about an hour a day, which I think is not enough now that I've gotten a bit more...

Re: Best blues drummers

A little sidetrack comment on your little sidetrack post. Bass players have sure had some nice options come out in the last 25 years or so, what with the high-end amps and basses with exotic...

I was thinking the exact same thing while reading through this thread. I don't know enough about the blues to offer any names, but I'd rather hear the names of the traditional blues players to go...

Buddy Rich on Double Bass

If this has been posted before I apologize. I used the search function and didn't see it.

Here's a youtube clip I found of a short solo Buddy Rich played on double bass drums. No other drums....
