Re: Advice on cheap second hand kit for recording (70's rock/prog)

Anaon : aren't you interested in the Tama kit I sent ?
This is rock solid kit, 6 piece which is - IMO - better if you want to play 70's prog.

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

I'm totally with you on this one, and I mentioned it in another thread. It's hard to find today a traditional shell pack. I would certainly be a client for a 22x16 12 13 16x16 Gretsch Renown or of...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I ordered and freshly been delivered a Pearl floor tom > jungle bassdrum conversion kit.
To be able to play in small pubs. I can't say that I'm very excited to try it out.

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

And even worse : deep bass drum with ultra deep hoop. Silly, you really need to have room to waste on stage or in your car.

Re: Maybe I'm done compensating for my height ;)

The 15" floor seems like a good idea, paired with a 12x8 or 12x9 rack tom.
I have never tried a 20x14 ; but I kind of liked the 20x16 I came across. I would choose this depth.

Re: British Drum Company

I've just found the price tag for a 4 piece shell pack BDC in France : 3700 €.
Ok. Largely out of league.
More or less The price of a DW collector.

Nice vintage Premier snares. Here are mine.

Re: Advice on cheap second hand kit for recording (70's rock/prog)

One important question :
How much is "cheap" ?

Re: Advice on cheap second hand kit for recording (70's rock/prog)

The mesh head as reso head can be a solution to emulate 70's concert without the look.
Anyway if your in proggy stuff, try to get at least a 6 piece kit, 22 10 12 13 16 plus snare. For Genesis, or...

Re: 4 piece kit

Hanging toms are painful (placement, balance) that's true, but I felt that a suspended 14" sounded better than a floor 14".

Re: How many have matching snare finish & brand with rest of kit?

The motorcity NEEDS the matching snare drum ! It's such a specific kit you have.

The topic was down for a long time, when I last posted, I had put my hand on a matching snare for my kit, ... now I...

Re: Tip of the day

I used to have my splash in the middle of the Tom mount. On every picture, I had the splash in front of my face ! I dont use the splash much. I moved it between the hat and the first Tom. it's...

Re: Weights inside new Yamaha bass drum. Can someone explain how this works?

I'm not sure it's about the shell. My bass drum is bloody heavy, but the shell is lightweight. The hardware, the hoops are thick and heavy. I think it's the same for Gretsch : thin shells heavy...

Re: Weights inside new Yamaha bass drum. Can someone explain how this works?

I remember Simon Philips putting a paint pot in his bass drum for a better sound.
Yamaha are known as lightweight, I'm not sure those weights are enough to change anything, but it's true the best...

Re: To drill or not to drill?

Exactly my idea.
I would leave this drums alone, no drilling except if the spur case or the screws are cracked or non functional - which happened to me on an old Tama with the disappearing spurs....

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

You're right, those half painted hoops may look cheap.
About the DW quest for new veneers, wood essences, each time I watch the video, the drums sounds like drums, with sound compression, not that...

Re: In praise of the 13 inch tom!

I jump in !
It's difficult to find kits of the old standard 22 12 13 16 nowadays.
Outdated, too ubiquitous few years ago, they're now disappearing.
But damn, each time I try a 10x7 12x8 16x14 new...

Re: The magic of a simple kit

I can be happy and gig with a 4 piece drum kit, no problem though I prefer 5.
But the few times I giged or rehearsed with just one crash, one ride and hat : it was a pain !
I'm really too used to...

Re: Struggles of Short Drummer and 5-Piece with Offset Toms

The 12" seems to be on your knee ; maybe it's more comfortable for you.
What is the series of your snare drum ?

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

vyacheslav post was still interesting about the fact that some trends could be a problem when you share equipment with other drummers.
The "no rack tom" trend or 16" Hihat would put me in difficulty...

Re: Very high pitch snare sound

Metal (steel or brass) Pearl FF are very powerful ; the impression I had was that they weren't that well for soft players ; those snare drums are for heavy strokes and are powerful. To my ears the FF...
