Re: Keeping time when no one else is...

I've worked with a singer/songwriter who not only had bad time but couldn't count/feel the 16 bars go by. We'd be playing a gig and he would come in with the vocal on bar 13 or something and we'd...

Re: Some thoughts on keeping time

We are always keeping time, whether we like it or believe it or not. The same laser-like focus that can be brought into rim shot consistency, for example can be expanded to include everything you do....

Re: Stress fractures?

I have no idea how you guys how you guys play barefoot. I'm pretty sure my feet would be beat up from that. (never mind walking around at a gig looking like a hillbilly LOL)

To the OP. Don't...

Opening for Nile this Sunday with Sunlord

I can definitely say for sure that the drummer I will be opening up for this week is faster than me.

I hope to meet George before the show. I know that, with backstage access as a performer, I...

Re: Pain in my left wrist.

I can't "diagnose" without seeing you but I can tell you that I have never seen a matched grip player with a snare tilted forwards.

It seems to me that your wrist would have to go into a funky...

Re: Rock Gigs Not Very Rock Anymore?

This statement is 100% true. Except for the part about the band being paid...

Wow, bro, that was painful to watch.

Re: Does Chris Dave use Mike Mangini's 'shiver' technique?

I'm pretty sure that when he is up at those insane speeds he's shivering. You don't need me, just watch a ton of his videos, both solos and with DT and find those places where he goes at those...

Re: Does Chris Dave use Mike Mangini's 'shiver' technique?

I've only seen one other guy ever do the shiver like Mike. He was a WFD competitor who posted a vid on YT.

It's not really a "drumming" technique. If you can make yourself shiver then the next...

Re: Does Chris Dave use Mike Mangini's 'shiver' technique?

No, that is not the shiver technique. It appears as if Chris is playing a single stroke roll from the wrists. His control is incredible but he's not shivering.

The index finger placement is...

Re: celebrate what would have been his 60th

Man, It's amazing how fast time flies...

I remember first hearing "Hold the Line" and just being blown away by his presence. Such authority and dripping with feel.

Its sad how the drugs caught...

Re: How do you not hear your bass drum?

The only times that has happened to me was when I was playing in a metal band with two guitarists and a bassist who cranked up to 11.

With "normal" music, it shouldn't happen.

Re: Tips on drum rooms?

If you are not worried about "soundproofing" then you are lucky.

Rectangular or square rooms cause many problems. Your first step would be to put bass traps in the corners. You can make these...

Re: How to make my kick sound less boomy without using muffling?

i

The very title of your thread tells me that you are approaching things "drumistically". You should have a definite reason why you want a certain head combo and that reason should always serve...

Re: What do you think about Casey Cooper (COOP3RDRUMM3R)

We must have different definitions of the word "big".

Has he played on any recordings that have sold? No.

Has he played on any tier-one tours? No.

Here are some people that have made it...

Re: My bizarre, ego-destroying experience

I couldn't agree more, the guy sounds like a real jerk. You displayed class and restraint, I might have told him to F-off.

Re: Drumming pain

The reality probably is that your technique has slipped over the past years without your noticing. I bet you 50 bucks that Bill Bachman would find plenty of things wrong (not to criticize you, but...

Re: What do you think about Casey Cooper (COOP3RDRUMM3R)

Am I missing something? He plays about as well as a first year Berklee student. Stick tricks are friggin' played out, too.

Yeah, OK. Instead of following someone like Gavin Harrison or Chris Dave...

Re: Double stroke roll lesson for Modern Drummer

Bill is the man. Incredible hands and a great ear to go with them.

He played crescendos and decrescendos for me with doubles that were so picture perfect I wanted to laugh.

Rim shot on the...

Excellent post. I'd never heard that Zappa quote before, do you have any idea where I might be able to read it in context?

Re: Is it bad to have little or no individuality?

Actually, you're doing exactly what I and many other drummers did. It's a good place to start on your journey.

Also, remember this, we as drummers live in our own little world where we concern...

Re: groove vs chops?

This thread has officially become nonsensical. I have no idea what point is being made due to all the antagonism and misinformation.

Re: groove vs chops?

The real definition of "chops" is: a skill set. It has nothing to do with the ability to play 16ths at 280 BPM.

For example: " I need to work on my afro cuban 6/8 chops". This is referring to the...
