Re: Some In-Tense porn for the weekend ;)

Maybe there should be a disclaimer about the rocks and how Andy actually sets up the kits safely on them in every picture of these, since they get commented on this often ;)

"These drums were set...

Re: Jenkins-Martin (Blaemire) announces "Starry Night" Limited Edition.

Aw, uniongoon, I think it looks good (and definitely accurate to the painting).

I think they used a Stealth Rack so as not to obstruct the floor toms.

Re: Mapex

I've actually been planning on getting a 12" MPX hammered steel snare sometime for a side snare. Love the look, love the price, and the modicum of attention they actually give to them (as opposed to...

Re: Some In-Tense porn for the weekend ;)

Oh, wow. That's great. I like the badge placement too, unorthodox but nicely symbolic. I'd better start the saving now (or at least get to work on that snare contest...).

Those kick spurs look a...

Re: Removing metal washers from tension rods

It might be different for different manufacturers, but washers on the ones from DrumFactoryDirect are too tight to actually go past the threads (without special treatment ;) ).

Re: Pearl 6.5x14 Brass Reference Snare info

The wood snares have single-45 edges, and Drum Center of Portsmouth lists the metal models as having 45 degree edges, so the one you mentioned most likely has single-45 degree bearing edges.

Re: Pdp Concept Maple or Pearl Export

I would unequivocally recommend the PDP. It doesn't come with hardware or cymbals like the Pearl, so your cash actually goes into engineering good drums. Plus I think they sound fantastic, especially...

Re: Greg Bissonette leaves Mapex

Obviously us.

I've quite liked the finishes I've seen of those Artisan kits though they are a bit too 'techno' in my opinion. Not a lot of info about ordering or prices last I checked either.

Re: Removing metal washers from tension rods

Yeah, it's really a non-issue... I've used them with nylon underneath for a year, and now I use them all with HD Sleeved Washers underneath, and there's no issue with the metal ones.

Also, may I...

Absolutely.

What OP calls greedy, I call necessity.

Re: Hiring drummers for a project, need drummer advice.

Does that not imply that they should be paid after completing their work? I agree with the "pay up front" thing anyways.

Re: Sarai custom drums?

If it's at a good price, sure, go for it! I've heard plenty of the 14x6.5" brass and it's definitely also a workhorse. If you're looking for something a bit thicker (IIRC) and faster than your Mapex,...

Re: Types of Snare Drum

Obviously it'll have the greatest effect on the best snare shell of all time... a Keller 50-ply 14x3.5" ;) ;) ;)

Re: Types of Snare Drum

chiming in on Opentune's question... I'd expect more tone (very generally) at lower volumes and a bit more shell involvement in the overall sound.

Oh, we forgot to mention gaskets.

Re: Sarai custom drums?

Well, I guess it depends on the thickness and edges of the Sarai, but generally you could expect the Sarai to have more body & depth to it, while the Hakim will probably have a quicker snare response...

Re: SJC Maple/Acrylic hybrid drums

They meant a tone killer in a bad way, not "killer tone". I agree with SunDog's initial assessment- 10-ply maple shells bisected with a chunk of acrylics is not something I'd categorize as "warm" or...

Re: Types of Snare Drum

Plus # of sets of snare wires, strainer systems, hoop type, head tuning and thickness and construction, additional effects... I couldn't even begin to explain how many "types" there are.

Re: DRUM Cymbals purchase.. HELP required !!!

Oh yeah, I should have said- basically any low-mid-end splash will work similarly to the big name ones I mentioned. Meinl Classics or MCS, Paiste PST5/8 or Alpha, and Wuhan's splashes aren't bad...

Re: DRUM Cymbals purchase.. HELP required !!!

Wuhans generally sound fine for their price. Some people prefer them to more expensive ones.

As for splashes, I've used ZHTs and B8s a fair bit and they sound honestly good for rock stuff with...

Re: Good deal?

Like Scylla and Charybdis in here... I think the Renowns are very jazz-potent, they're probably more on that side of the spectrum than the metal side. What qualms have you read about with the GTS...

Re: Sarai custom drums?

I don't know, that sounds like a very fair price for me. Especially for a stave snare. I'd be pretty lusty-eyed for that deal ;)

Re: Help with plastic souding Tama Superstar Hyperdrive, PLEASE

Very concise & accurate. May I add- for a little bit more "punch" and darker tone, try clear Vintage Emperors (or one step further would be Evans Black Chrome or Ebony Emperors.)

Re: Good deal?

If it upsets you that much, then you should consider also that the Gretsch Renown has isolation mounts, not those directly mounted ones (unless its seller has modded it). For that reason, I'd go for...

Re: Mapex Armoury

I wouldn't really care about the resale value, FWIW. Armo(u)ry kits look really great and people seemed to like their Meridian Blacks a lot- which had similar shells to these. The only thing I'd...
