Re: Band leaders

In the band that I played with for over 10 years, there was a gradual decay in the ethos of the band. At first it was fairly democratic- there were some fairly big personalities, but an air of...

Re: Injury stories while drumming

I had bi-lateral carpal tunnel release surgery in 2005/6. I had my right wrist done first followed by my left in early 2006. The recommended recovery period without playing was 4 weeks with a...

Re: buying all new

8 lugs on the 14" tom for a start. I had a 6 lug 14" tom on my old Rockstar Custom and it was a pain for losing it's tuning in comparison with 8 lug drums I've owned.

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

I saw him do a Tama drum clinic back in the 80's and then only a couple of weeks ago when he and his band played Ronnie Scott's. I wasn't there in person- it was livestreamed, but was great- he has...

Re: RUSH retirement rumor

I witnessed the 2007 Genesis "Turn it on Again" tour.

Retire and stay retired, that's my advice.

Re: "Museum piece" kits

I kinda get the museum piece thing, but it's not for me. Cars, aeroplanes, drum kits, whatever area your interest lies in, I much prefer seeing things used as they were intended, drums played, cars...

Re: In with both feet!

To be fair, any band worth their salt isn't going to expect 55 songs down before the audition. When you get their list of what they want you to do for the audition, make sure that they clarify what...

Re: James Taylor & Steve Gadd yesterday night

I've seen James 4 times now, he never ceases to impress me with his musicanship and his humanity. The last 2 times he spent the entire interval chating to and signing autographs for fans at the front...

Re: Last Minute Gig Fees

I look at learning the set as my investment in getting called again for other deps with the same band. To me it's like turning up on time with working gear dressed appropriately for the gig. If they...

Re: Hi-Hats: Tight or loose????

Gibraltar quick release clutch- no screw to loosen! See above, clearly great minds think alike. I now have 2, one for my gigging kit and one in my stick bag fro rehearsal room kits.

Re: Premier kit 1970's ?

My guess would be an Elite from the late 70's or early '80's. Birch with beech re-rings and in a 22-13-14-16 configuration. Looks like polychromatic gold with added pinstriping on the shell (probably...

Re: Two floor toms....

I have 3 floor toms, a 14/16/18 combo. The 16 came with the rest of the kit and I added the 14 and 18 later when the finish was discontinued. I've only used 2 floor toms occasionally and never all 3,...

Re: What's your story about how you started drumming?

I, like many was a singer early on. I sang solo as a boy soprano and I guess that's where my love of music, and of performing came from. My first awareness of being aware of drums as an instrument...

Re: Using a PA

We put everything through the PA as otherwise we end up with excruciating levels from the backline on stage. Beware the guitarist with access to a volume knob....

Re: How many times have you been asked...

The only person i worry about damaging my kit is me generally. I hit pretty hard, so if it survives me, it will pretty much survive anything...

Re: Do you own (or want to own) both acoustic and electric kits?

I have lots of acoustic kit and a few pieces of electronic gear (DTX multi 12, pads, pedals etc). I have owned 2 electronic kits over the years an analogue kit was my first kit in the previous...

Re: Restoring hardware on an old kit

Just to add my 2p worth, when i built my daughters kit, I took all of the lugs and mounting hardware off of the drums and soaked them overnight in initially hot water with 2 dishwasher tabs disolved...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Do you need a teacher? Possibly not! What you may want to consider is a coach who can help you by figuring out your priorities and getting you to motivate yourself in the right way? A teacher needs...

Re: To sell or keep my old Stage Customs: A dilemma

I think it's as simple as you just don't like them any more. If you don't like the sound, you aren't going to play them, so they might as well be released into the wild. Is there a sound you couldn't...

Re: The Bo Eder Pearl Vision Signature kit ;)

My daughters little kit is all orphans. the difference is that they are all black, and the 12,13 and the 16 toms (the 16 is the bass drum in her set) are all Premiers from the 70's and 80's and this...

Re: Where's Magenta?

Madge, I get where you're coming from. I recently left a band I had been in for 10 years and a mate and I started another. It all went very slowly at first. I had been playing the same stuff for...

Re: Why no love for Vintage Premier?

Not sure that the snares are available. Puresound used to produce compatible snares, but they seem to be discontinued. Try Nick Hopkins Drums in the UK http://www.nickhopkindrums.com/, they may be...

Re: If you could build you DREAM KIT, what would it be/include? (Shells, cymbals, hardware, etc.)

I don't have a dream kit. I have all of the drums and cymbals that I will ever need ( although this probably won't stop me buying more to be fair). What I really want is a roadie to move my gear, set...
