Re: Micing my kit with 3 mics

Although I'd like to add one more mic, I'm having great results with my current 3 mic set up.

Shure Beta 52 on the kick.
Shure SM57 on the snare.
AKG C-214 at the 5 o'clock position, shoulder...

Re: What gear do you see people trying to move the most?

Seems 95% of it is entry-level gear.

Re: Tilting the snare

I spent a lot of time thinking about this and experimenting with different angles years ago. I eventually decided it was pointless and it's been perfectly flat since then.

Re: Comparisons on Mars Volta drummers

Jon Theodore blew me away. Some of the best drumming I've ever heard. While I appreciated the fury that Pridgeon played with, it just didn't impress me as much as Jon. Can't speak for Elitch as I...

Re: Favorite/Least Favorite Finishes

Color really doesn't matter much. I just need to see the wood grain.

It's changes daily, if not hourly.

The two constants have been Benny Greb and JoJo Mayer.

Re: Chad Smith's Superbowl drum set

Not a big fan of Mr. Mars but I'm curious how this plays out.

Re: Why do people treat their drums so badly?

I think many people just don't know and don't care about drum maintenance. They buy them, demo them, whatever, and just beat the ever-living **** out of them, only to decide they don't enjoy it.

Re: Do You Play Another Instrument Besides Drums?

Since I just can't my drum set in the house, I noodle around on guitar in the evenings.

I have a Fender American Telecaster I spend quite a bit of time with when the kids go to bed.

Re: Chad Smith's Superbowl drum set

Is he playing drums for Bruno Mars?

Cool looking kit, BTW. I'm a huge NFL junkie.

Re: Jordison out

In other words, a bunch of lawyers, record company execs, and agents are super pissed that this got out before they wanted it to. Maybe there was an idea of a farewell tour being thrown around at the...

Re: Mount Rushmore of Drumming: What does it look like?

I play the guitar, too. Rory is one of my favorites. His acoustic slide playing is the best I've ever heard. For an Irishman, he nailed that Delta sound better than many of the actual Delta boys.

Re: Mount Rushmore of Drumming: What does it look like?

Alright, I'll throw a rock at the hornet's nest.

1. Buddy
2. Gadd
3. Ringo
4. Colaiuta

I think when catalog, enthusiasm for the instrument, and influence on others is taken into...

Re: Open mic fiasco.

Sorry to hear that. It's happened to me before. I can deal with crappy gear, but what is completely miserable is when everything slides around. It's maddening.

Re: Reason why no Keith Moon type drummers exists on main stream music

Times have changed. Mainstream rock audiences have come to expect as polished, formulaic, and predictable of a delivery as possible.

Re: A song sprung on you out of the blue?

I think this sort of fits the criteria.

Probably 10 years ago I was playing in a band that had a style that was in the vein of what was considered modern rock at the time...stuff like Chevelle,...

Re: How to stop customers from pawing cymbals?

Well said. I feel the same about most of my cymbals. I will admit I like to keep my A Customs polished. It goes both ways, I guess. I don't mind my Meinl's looking they've been gracefully aged for...

Re: Why do we assume that handmade is better?

I think the best products, in general, are those that are created with equal parts precision machining and human scrutiny. A machine doesn't always know when it's made an oversight, and a human...

Re: Jordison out

I know there are Slipknot fans, but I don't think they've been a band of much relevance for quite a few years now. If they were to put anything new out it would only satisfy a very small niche and I...

Re: When you let someone hold your sticks, is their first reaction to poke you?

In my experience, they just look for the nearest surface to tap on while holding the sticks as awkwardly as possible.

Re: Most egotistical genre ;)

I'd say it's a toss up between traditional jazz and whatever current niche the hipsters are into.

Re: Song that gets you out of a funk

For the last few years it's been a song called "In Flight" by a band from (I think) England named Amusement Parks on Fire. Quite an amazing tune....very powerful and anthemic.

Re: Soundguys and drummers

It's kinda like heckling a comedian. You could have the funniest jabs, but he's the one with the microphone. That's how I look at the relationship between musicians and sound guys. I've also seen a...

Re: Race in drumming

While there are certainly the obvious differences between a black and white man, you can't forget that the DNA both share is identical. If human DNA was the ocean, for example, the little part that...
