Re: I Think A Lot Of People Misjudge Buddy Rich

There's a great record of him with Art Tatum and Lionel Hampton (stellar lineup anyone?) called Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol.3. I think there are 8 different collections in total, but two of them...

Re: I HATE BEING IN A BAND SOMETIMES

I can understand your frustration as it seems like you really enjoy this gig and obviously getting money from playing music. That said, I'm going to put myself in the minority real quick. Not knowing...

Re: Floor Tom to Bass Drum

Wow, thanks guys. I had no idea they had hardware for this sort of thing. I was thinking i would have to remove the wrap and legs on the tom and put bass drum legs on it and find 16" bass drum hoops...

Floor Tom to Bass Drum

I tried a search on this, so I apologize if this has already been discussed. I was wondering if anyone has experience turning a floor tom into a bass drum, how they did so, and about how much it cost...

Re: Singing Drummers?

Sort of on this note, Mel Torme would be a good one to mention. I remember reading Buddy Rich's biography (written by Torme) and after one of Rich's singing gigs he asked Mel Torme what he thought...

Re: What are your Drumming Prejudices?

That is entirely possible and I had not thought of that. However, I think that might be giving him more credit than is deserved. Maybe not. You make a good point though.

Re: What are your Drumming Prejudices?

I've always hated people who have parts of their kit that barely get used. For example, I once saw a drummer that had a china over and behind his head (a la John Blackwell) and he hit it once the...

Re: The most randomest of random question you will ever hear!!!

Slight alteration for you banana lovers. If you spread some Nutella on it, it's like riding in the most glorious chariot that was ever to be ridden...or something. It's good.

Re: Band practice

You could practice the songs to a click (irritating and not very different, but possibly helpful). You could also identify smaller sections of songs that are not up to par and really go at those...

Re: Sleep your way to better meter

I think it's a little different than putting your textbook under your pillow. It's more like having the information from your textbook being played from a recording, which I think is a little more...

Re: Drummers and the stuff they popularized

I think we could all live without that. If I knew how to do one of the little faces that rolls its eyes, I would insert one here.

Re: Music Fair Frankfurt 2009 - photos!

That third Pearl kit in your original post looks hard to get into, let alone play. I wouldn't really know where to start. You'd have to do an army crawl under a floor tom just to get to your throne.

Re: Help Learning/Playing Drums

I would second (or third, whatever we're at) the advice of playing very simply. I'm guessing this is probably a rock setup, so as long as you're locking one and three on bass and two and four bass...

Re: The British or the Americans?

That may be true but I think that jazz is going to have its place in American music for quite some time. When you go to Berklee or whatever school you go to for learning set, they teach you using a...

Re: Favourite Drummer, Bass player Combo

Certainly not saying any "best evers" or even really personal favorites, but Ahmir Thompson and Leonard Hubbard of The Roots have some really tight moments.

Re: Would John Bonham be here?

If you're implying that I had some intention of offending or being derogatory you're a bit off course. I was just pointing out that Westicle had his right to his opinion (albeit off-topic for the...

Re: Would John Bonham be here?

Why is it not ok for someone to just say that a particular drummer is not their style? I can recognize that Bonham was pretty good for what he was, but personally (and apparently for Westicle) he...

Re: Idea for all Drum Makers out there: a story

Just a thought. This might be because you had it tuned up high and it got detuned slightly in the time it was in the sunlit room, which caused it to sound better. Just saying, it might not be...

Re: 'Drummers are natural intellectuals.'It's Official.

Not to be the guy that looks at this all serious and whatnot, but I'm not so sure about this whole thing. Consider the beginning drummer whose time is rather lousy. Over the course of time, in which...

I would have to hold with the people who favor the bags. I don't have them myself, but have been carrying my drums around to practices and such for the last few months quite frequently. After this...

Re: Fines for Drummers

I love that this was clearly written by a jazz drummer. It's pretty easy to tell as some of the heaviest fines relate to brushes and ride cymbals. I think I managed to escape this list unscathed...
