Re: Snare wires for jazz??

I'm using an evans genera dry coated on the batter - I usually have an ambassador but wanted to try something different and now I'm playing unmiked and not rock. Oh well, still like the sound...

Snare wires for jazz??

Hey all, long time no see!

Anyway, I'm using a 5" ludwig supraphonic snare from the late 60's. Been playing mostly functions and mostly rock etc. Have had puresound equalizer snares on it for a...

Re: Playing on reversed rack toms.

If I remember correctly Kenny Aronoff (don't pick on my spelling ;) ) does this too. I think it was to make fills interesting. Did Virgil Donati do it as well?

Re: Point of facing snare head away from you?

I think Weckl does the same thing, tilts it slightly to the side. I used to do this when trying traditional and didn't mind it.

Re: snares ringing???

I've never been able to get rid of it with my supraphonic. I just live with it. Can't notice it when the band is playing. Don't notice it when it's loudish. And actually, when I don't hear it now...

Re: bass drum replacement hoops?

My 20x14 had metal hoops, and I changed them to wooden ones. The pitch went down (woo hoo) and more round, less pingy. So I guess the opposite might happen going from wood to steel.

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

Lack of training - any training. I can barely to a parradiddle! But I have fun.

Re: Where do you put your drums?/Practise rooms

On the shelves at my work! With kids and a little 3 bedroom house I haven't had drums set up for practice in over 7 years now!!!

But, hopefully building a house soon, and with only 1 car that...

Re: Evans bass Drum Pillow Lengths

You can get this stuff called cortelle or dacron (same stuff, different names), usually from furniture re-upholsterers (that's what I do). A music shop told me it's the same stuff that's in the...

Re: What's the last song that completely blew you away?

Mines just really simple plain rock, the way I love it. Whenever I hear this song at work I still have to turn it up. It's just like 'the' rock song for me of the last 5 years!

Powderfinger -...

Re: is grade 3 good?

We use grading systems in Australia, probably the same as the British. Remembering, it's not just for percussion, and probably seen less so in percussion. It's across all instruments, brasswind,...

Re: Virgil Donati

My fav virgil clip is from years ago, I think it was the Australian Aria Awards. Melissa Etheridge performed 'Like the Way I do' with artists Jack Jones (guitar) and Virgil Donati from Aussie band...

I would guess you just replicate what you do with your right hand on your left hand.

Re: Arbiter drums?

He might be talking about the original shell versions of these drums, which used the same tuning system. The were reviewed in a MD many years ago now. I liked the idea of them.

I wouldn't like...

Re: Does anyone elses guitarist do this?

I must be one of the few where our band all treats eachother as mates before band mates. Actually, they are my best friends, so we don't have this problem.

But for a solution, just angle the...

Re: Arbiter drums?

I believe in the original Austin Powers International Man of Mystery when they have there little music interludes breaking scenes the drummer is playing a set of those single tuning lug arbiters.

Re: Charlie Watts

I've heard a story where when Mick and Keith wanna tour they ring Charlie; he'll say no so they don't tour. Next year they try again and he'll go 'yes' and they're off. The other is that it's...

Re: Cymbal angle because of weight?!

I can't say it happens to me specifically, but I don't see why it wouldn't happen. Firstly a K, with I'm guessing some hand hammering etc. And then, I guess it would only take a handfull of grams...

Re: large air vents in snares

So, does anyone have any ideas on the best way to cut a vent in a snare?? I have an old olympic snare and thought I might have some fun :)

Just chuck a hole saw in the drill and off I go?

Re: Lenny White

Gotta see if I've got the right guy here - he plays open handed traditional grip on a right hand setup kit? I've got a cd somewhere called hot jaz biscuits and I'm sure it's mostly him on the drums...

Re: Andy Newmark

I don't think I've ever seen andy play anything bigger than a 4 piece kit with 2 crashes, a ride and hihat. 24 years since 'The High Road' and he's still using the same kit set up. It's all about...

Re: Tuning the kick/bass drum

To get the click years ago I used to use a lot of muffling and had a coin taped to the batter head with gaff tape.

I use a 20x14 so my boom isn't big, but I don't use thick heads on it and one or...

Andy is one of my fav drummers. He features on Roxy Musics 'The High Road' concert video from about 1983 and a Bryan Ferry concert video of mine from the early 90's. Tons of groove. He played with...
