Re: Polyrhythm Metronome App

I'm not gonna argue with anyone dude. My work is demonstrated and applied in a musical manner. There's record of it on recordings and video. I wrote a book on using polyrhythms 15 years ago. If it...

Re: Can you read sheet music?

I read rhythm pretty well but don't read melody. It's a weakness of mine that someday I'll fix.

Re: How to play 4 against 7

You're going to have to notate something for me because one of us doesn't understand what a polyrhythm is.

Re: How to play 4 against 7

Here's the inverted 7:4 (Seven over four). Polyrhythm. If you play the accent alone + the quarter note beat of the 4 (the '1' in each group of 7) then you'll hear the 7 against the 4. The groupings...

Re: How to play 4 against 7

No, Metric modulation is when you play a figure across the barline to approximate another time signature.

Polyrhythm means literally "more than one rhythm".

If what you're saying is true then...

Re: How to play 4 against 7

If you pay attention to the rhythm in 4 that's chugging underneath the flow in 7, then you'll know it's a true polyrhythm.

Here's how to calculate polyrhythms: To play "X" against "Y", start with...

Re: 15 for 30 challenge!

I'm supposed to do the 1040 challenge today (10bpm for 40 min, because tax day) but I'm wondering "do I need to?" I'm gonna do it, probably not today though.

I'm filing an extension!

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

Playing with a metronome= working on your absolute time

Playing with a band- relative time.

To get good relative time you have to work on the absolute time.

Re: WFD in Atlanta !!!

In accordance with tax day tomorrow, i am doing my 1040. 10bpm for 40 minutes.

I think that is gonna set the bar low enough.

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

This. YOU, the drummer, should know the tunes. Period. Don't rely upon a device to guide you from point A to point B... that's what escalators and powered walkways do! Walk on your own two feet on...

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

I use "I will survive" as a reference to 120bpm. Funny story- I got pulled over once by a cop who said "You didn't stop long enough at that stop sign". So I asked him "I know I came to a complete...

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

Usually helps to know the song, and then count it off.

If you don't know the song, then let the guitarist start playing the tune and show yourself in. That's what I do. It's 99% effective. That...

Re: Six stroke roll - tunes

Use them as fills. Try playing this permutation (CAPS are accents, lowercase non-accents)

||: R L r r l l R L r r l l :||

Play the single strokes (RL) on the toms, accent them strongly and...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

It's a very incremental process, just like any other sort of development. You just keep doing it and it gets easier. Some days you feel like you've taken several backwards steps, other days you feel...

I used to have a lot of hair on my head. Then, like the buffalo it migrated. To my back, ears, nose, etc.

Re: Open-handed with traditional grip

Every so often I'll play open handed using traditional grip; only because one should have that control over the stick anyway! :D Does it make any difference? Not really, only except I know that I can...

Re: How to improve rhythm and timing of each note? (Issues with bass drum strokes being slightly off

Gavin Harrison recommended putting on a click track (at a NORMAL tempo, LOL) and playing a simple beat and recording it. Then when you play it back, slow it down and listen to the discrepancies...

15 for 30 challenge!

15bpm for 30 minutes. Play the same simple beat. 8th notes on the hats, 1&3 on kick, 2&4 on snare.

The metronome can be subdivided to 8th notes and no smaller, since the hihat is playing 8ths,...
