Re: JOHN RILEY here...new DVD: samples here....

Re: JOHN RILEY here...new DVD: samples here....

Well I have been taught by a top UK teacher called Dave Hassell, who teaches to use the whole arm with the elbow from side to side when doing uptempo ride cymbal playing. I find if I'm just using my...

It made me think about what Jack...

Re: JOHN RILEY here...new DVD: samples here....

Well I have had this DVD for a fortnight and have to say it's probably one of the best DVD's a jazz drummer could buy. Though anyone could benefit from it. Really well thought out.

What is so good...

Re: Syncopated Rolls for the Modern Drummer by Jim Blackley

Well for example, exercise 8 on pg 100 of the three bar resolutions, which is the tied 3 beat figure, downbeat to upbeat.

When playing the extension for this phrase I'm focusing on the sticking...

Re: Syncopated Rolls for the Modern Drummer by Jim Blackley

Hello again!!

I'm just trying to fathom out the explanations on Pg 12, "Search for sounds and textures". Where Jim explains for instance on ex 3 of playing all exercises with RH on Ride, and the...

I was just seeing if anybody knows of this book- if so, then I would like to ask some questions. But I'm not goin to bother typing it all if nobody knows of the book.

Does anyone know Omar Hakim's groove off Shinjuku Strut off the "Let it Flow" video. Just one of the funkiest grooves ever. Love to see a transcription!

Re: Jim Chapin: Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer

I think Chapins book is great, but Dawson takes it to the next level IMHO. I'm taking a different approach to jazz time as my teacher is a former student of Jim Blackley and its a more musical...

Re: Jim Chapin: Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer

A quote from my teacher- "What should my lh, bd be doing when playing jazz?

Answer- If you hear nothing, carry on playing swinging time."

I've learnt it's a bit of a myth that we have to get...

Re: Anybody Have The ORIGINAL Chafee "Time Functioning" (Black & White Cover)

Although I don't know much about linear, the bottom notes are always the kick. And the top is usually hi hat and snare, though you could play toms as well. You can change the accents around to some...

Re: Anybody Have The ORIGINAL Chafee "Time Functioning" (Black & White Cover)

Re: STICK CONTROL (george L stone) your experiences and suggestions

What would you say is a good target tempo as I have tried working it up and when I get to 120, I struggle playing singles with the left and bass drum. I will work it much slower though obviously!

Anybody heard his playing on MIchael Brecker's "Pilgrimage". Esp on the title track, "Anagram" and "Tumbleweed".

Unbelievable player, so melodic.

On his drummerworld page, John Abercrombie says...
