Re: Is it too late to start drumming to a certain level?

My mate just turned twenty five. He's been playing for about three months.

I'm absolutely determined to turn him into a great drummer. I need him to be good by this coming Christmas, since I'm...

Re: Two-handed 16th rhythms on the hats.....

The key to making these beats sound good comes down to two things, like with all beats; timing and dynamics.

It's just this particular kind of beat is more difficult. It takes time to develop a...

Re: What's YOUR favorite rudiment?

I like the flam variations really... But one single rudiment? Has to be the inverted paradiddle; rllrlrrlrllrlrrl

I like to accent it like so: RllRLrrLRllRLrrL

Nah. It's nice but I still prefer...

Re: What are you working on?

Maybe people don't like giving away their secrets ;)

Sometimes I think like that... I won't show off my beats in case somebody steals them... But come on, like I'm doing something that hasn't been...

Re: defying conventional drum set up for unique sound

Hmm... I like the idea of being unconventional.

I'm playing with a floor tom bass at the moment. Nice jungle sound. The rest of my kit consists of a hi-hat, a snare and a piccolo snare. So I...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Erm, nah. I don't like Manu's kit, his solos, and definitely not his splash cymbals.

I'm open to considering that there are some cymbals considered splashes that aren't too bad, but generally they...

Re: Drummers who've inspired your playing

If I continue to improve, soon I hope to be a perfect mixture of Tony Allen, Alan Wren and Bernard Purdie.

Re: Tony Allen

Allen is the most musical player I've ever heard; an absolute dream for any musician to collaborate with. His taste and timing are impeccable. He created his own style of drumming and plays loosely,...

Re: Long torso, short legs - advice?

It seems common for beginners to blame all kinds of stuff and overlook that it's simply a lack of experience and technique that's giving them a rough time.

Beginner guitarists will often complain...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Does anyone ever ride their splash? I would imagine that to sound awful, but you know, context allowing, it might be alright... Urgh...

Re: What are you working on?

I actually don't have anything to my right hand side... Just snare-bass-hats with another snare on my left, so double traditional isn't so bad!

And now after reading your post I'm playing...

What are you working on?

Anything in particular? Got any goals? New styles n' that?

At the moment I'm:

- Trying out different grips. I play matched-American grip but started to get a bit of left wrist pain, so now I'm...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Haha, possibly. Although I do like a nice ride, but... But... I'd have to take away one of the snares to accommodate that... I'm terrible, my kit has to be tiny or I feel cluttered.

Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Alright, not hate, but just a kind of disdain for them.

Maybe it's me being a bit particular. There's a very specific sound that I go for; it's quietly dynamic, woody, brushy and played on a small...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

Hmm... An unpopular opinion... Well, I do find drum solos completely boring, sometimes pretentious and generally consider them more like saturation.

I'm all about the beats. Beats with an...

Re: Drums are consuming me

Ha, I wouldn't even know what to do with a typical four piece plus cymbals, too much for me.

Re: Drums are consuming me

Strip it down to a three piece like mine! Bass-snare-snare. Floor tom bass actually, a 10x5.5 snare and a 13x3.5. Oh and just hi-hats, nothing else.

You'll open up new ideas for playing, get some...

Re: Drums are consuming me

I think that because I've had a good couple of nine month periods where I've studied three hours a day, I'm okay with less time these days. Still, nine or ten hours a week is still plenty as long as...

Re: Drums are consuming me

You can learn/improve a hell of a lot in just an hour a day. Make it ninety minutes and that's even better.

Just make sure you spend most of that time pushing your mental and physical limits;...

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

Yeah that's the kind of solo I'd get on alright with, keeping it short and coherent. But those Moby Dick type things, I can't do those and in fact I find them boring.

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

Drum solos. I can't solo at all really. I have a few nice fills under my belt but I'm all about the beats.

Re: Should I start out with electronic drums?

Hmm, mesh does sound like it'd feel better.

Still an acoustic lover though ;)
