buy a used high end kit, they're going for next to nothing right now. i've seen sonors, pearls, ludwigs, and gretschs high end stuff go for under a grand! don't skimp out.

i'm not sure it takes that much extra to play a 24", but i've grown up doing it so i dunno. but i agree that a 14x24 would give you that ooomph with out sacrificing playability.

i'd say look into C&C or noble & cooley, i feel in terms of american customs, they're some of the only ones making real custom drums, that is not keller/rci shells, plus they're just more luxourious...

16x16's are a pain when it comes to tuning, though if you're getting drums that big, you probably tune low
