Re: How tense are you when you play?

I've found I've got less tense as time has gone by, but I am more tense in front of an audience than not. Like others, I'm more tense if something just ain't right with my setup, the sound in the...

Re: Does playing covers change you?

I almost exclusively play 'pop' now. But it's mid-60s Stax, Motown, other soul, so it's all rather cool. And drumming-wise it's stripped down and to the point and I think it's made me a really solid...

Re: Always out of breath, need to get my stamina up somehow.

Like other said, get fitter.

I started playing ice hockey a year or so ago and started getting fitter so I could get better at that; doing runs, core exercises, some weights.

The spinoff...

Re: Who "invented" the rock beat?

No doubt the 2&4 backbeat came from the 40s or 50s, but the syncopated bass drum element of the archetypal rock beats of Bonham, Mitchell et al in the later 60s seem to me to be immediately preceded...

Re: A new idea? Probably not.

Snare, floor tom, bass is my primary setup right now. But that's for a Stax-type soul band and it is all I need.

Re: How to handle this situation

He sounds like he's taking the p*** big-time. Either re-negotiate a better share of the spoils or do what Squad Leader suggested. The latter sounds better cos the current band sounds like no fun...

Soundproofing Q - fill wall spaces or not?

I'm all set to build a drum cell in my basement and I feel happy about most of the construction (battens + resilient bar on walls/ceiling; acoustic batten cradle floor etc etc).

But I seem to be...

Re: Learning to play well on a 4 piece kit ....

3-piece here. Bonham kit with the high tom left out for my Stax-style soul band. Most of the fills are on the snare, with some rolling down to the floor tom.

Re: Deceptively cool and challenging drum tracks...

Lately Junior Walker's Roadrunner and Stevie Wonder's Uptight have thrown me a curve ball.

They're not really difficult, just a bit odd compared to what I was used to. Lots of unison BD hits.

Re: Joe Morello: I Couldn't Play Jo Jone's Bass Drum

That's how I understand it. "Open" as in resonant, not closed or choked off by a lack of reso head, hole in the reso head or stuff inside the drum.

Re: Songs composed by drummers

I wrote this when I'd been drumming for about a year. But I wrote it on guitar and gave it to the band to sort out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDN9Ow1DiwE&feature=youtu.be

Re: A REVELATION.

I should try trad some time. Currently my grips mix German (left hand) and French (right) for some reason. It works but it's not strictly matched.

Re: Shake by Otis - tips

Is it me or does it sound a lot more swung/triplety on the first one (Al Jackson Jr) than the second one (Carl Cunningham)?

Shake by Otis - tips

My band is adding Shake by Otis Redding to our set list. Now, I'm happy as whatever with a groove, but those breaks in Shake scare the **** outta me. Any tips for making a fist of them? At present...

Re: A rear line day - mini report.

I'm dreading the time I get an arsey soundman who doesn't like the lack of hole in the reso head on my 26" Ludwigs. Apart from, "None of the other drums have holes in and you can mic those up OK"...

Re: How LOUD were the classic rock bands??

Are you sure it's not just from your POV? I play a 24" Giant Beat (on a Bonham maple kit) in my soul band and it certainly doesn't drown out the band. I do mostly keep it for when we're tearing it up...

Re: Band PA ownership options - thoughts, experiences

yep. I think I'll go for D.

The next question is, do I charge the PA as an extra band member or part of one?

I'm tempted to go for 50% of a band member's cut, and up that to 100% if I add...

Band PA ownership options - thoughts, experiences

Our band needed a PA system. So I bought one. I can afford it but it's not cheap, obviously.

I'm wondering what to do with it re ownership. It seems to me there are 4 options:

A) I own it....

Re: Cover Band Drummists - How accurate are you?

I'm in a 60s Stax covers band right now, and I try to get close, but don't worry if I can't do everything. But I do go by the "Bugs Bunny's ears" theory someone came out with on another thread. IE,...

Re: Musically, what are you involved with at the present?

I'm in one band - The Soul Organization (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0uNGPcuOZ8) - 60s (mostly) Stax/Atlantic covers, Otis, Wilson Pickett etc.

It's an 8 piece: male singer, bass, guitar,...
