Re: Nuggets of hard won wisdom

Yes! Good one, Larry. When you're on a multi-band bill and there's another drummer waiting to set up his kit right after you, PLEASE, in the name of all that is righteous, don't start taking all your...

Re: 16th notes on single kick pedal

Never heard of him, but I wouldn't freak out too much on just the idea of 16ths on a single pedal because 1) if the tempo is slow enough, they're not impossible to string together, and 2) even if you...

Re: So you're going to a band audition...

I just went through the process of auditioning for a band. It took a couple of weeks and three different practices with them before finding out yesterday that I was in.

They first sent a link,...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Um, you guys know this wasn't a documentary, right? ;)

Haha, j/k. Speaking of JK, that guy's pretty great. I liked the flick well enough.

But when I got home, and feeling quite inspired, I...

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

Moving Pictures - Rush (cool to see this one on so many others' lists, too)
Spring Session M - Missing Persons
Discipline - King Crimson
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa
Free Fall - Dixie Dregs...

Re: Drumming as Art

I love this idea! In fact, it's practically the only way I practice drums anymore (time constraints and all). Bonus if there isn't already a drum track (Adele's 'Turning Tables' comes to mind). A lot...

Re: Drumming as Art

For me it comes down to transparency.

Vinnie is capable of being so completely transparent you can't tell it's him, and when he wants to shake that aspect you'll know because he'll blast you in...

Re: Now a morning drummer

My brain is definitely most fresh early in the morning so it's perfect for getting some music time in.

Re: Relighting my fire

If you can sorta play, you're good enough to start playing with others.

The biggest problem I see (with a lot of players) is this idea that you have to be at least *this* good before you put...

Re: It's hard to start a band, when you're a Drummer

Actually, some of the best writers I've ever met have been mediocre as players, and in some cases just awful. But it makes sense if you think about it; if you're main goal is to just conjure up...

Re: Anyone recognize this set?

Appears to have two 12" toms too. Weird.

Not much to work with on that one, IMO. I'd pass.

Re: Bass drum 16th's: The "a 3" vs. "3 e"

Two words: Immigrant Song.

That one will whip into shape 16th pairs from both sides in a hurry, tho there is one substitution - replace the ghost stroke on the snare on the last 16th of 4 with a...

Re: Yahoo.com 10 legendary rock drummers..

I caught that too, I mean, are you frikken kidding me? You'd be hard pressed to find an example of his playing that has *more* subtlety than Fool In The Rain.

But whaddaya gonna do? It's just one...

Re: Yahoo.com 10 legendary rock drummers..

BUT:...Awesome! Haha! Sorry Ian, couldn't resist :)

He's such a badass all-around musician that my taste for his vocals (a lot of which I really like) can have no bearing on the matter.

Re: Where's the best place to find a drummer for my band?

I've had really good luck with placing and responding to ads. One thing I've noticed with ads is that you have to be mindful of how you write them. For example, if you write one out of frustration or...

Re: Hand Care

Unfortunately no, that band is now defunct. We had a few sessions that produced a handful of songs but nothing we ever officially put out. Thanks for asking, though!

Re: Hand Care

FWIW, I still get callouses after more than 30 years' playing. I also get the same painful cracking that seems to always be worse in the winter. I can usually keep it at bay as long as I remember to...

Re: Freddie Gruber: Is It Necessary to Know Drum Rudiments?

I've also never taken formal lessons, but have never been shy about picking other drummer's brains over the more than three decades since I started playing in earnest - so I would feel like I was...

Re: Why do listeners move on as they get older?

I keep seeing the OP's thread title and think - why *wouldn't* listeners move on as they get older?

I know there are a lot of people who were rabid fans of whatever back in high school, but then...

Re: Yet another reason to tear down and load out right after the gig is over...

Ooh man, that could've sucked really bad!

Only place I've left my stuff setup for days on end was in recording studios. Suppose it could happen there too, tho seems a lot less likely. Yikes.

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

Man, I don't know that I ever play 32nds, but if/when I do, they're singles. I almost never use double strokes.

Re: I'm overwhelmed

Right on. This is exactly what I was trying to get at.

Players learn by playing. You can supplement with books, vids, and lessons, but there's just no substitute for just flat-out playing.

Re: I'm overwhelmed

I think a lot of this comes down to personality type.

If it were me, I'd toss every book and DVD, and step away from your computer completely. I'd then just sit at my kit and play the first thing...

Re: 420 musicians onstage

Glad you mention this. I remember reading that somewhere, too, but couldn't cite a source. I didn't try to look it up but it's a noticeable effect that I experience just as a matter of course. I...
