Re: Best throwoff switch?

I saw this thread, and I've also been wondering about changing the throw-off on my Black Beauty. Honestly, the stock one does seem terrible relative to all the good comments you see everywhere about...

Re: Roland SPD-S: waves stopping in Patch mode

Are you saying the loops only stop when you hit the snare sound twice? Not once?

I'm not sure what that would mean, but ordinarily the pad will stop your other pads from playing if it is assigned...

Re: Todd Sucherman here!

Todd,

I just finished watching your new DVD set. I had been waiting excitedly for it to become available at the store, and I finally got it yesterday. Thank you for once again doing such a...

Re: David Garibaldi' Drum Intro to Squib Cakes - Transcription & Audio

Thanks for the transcription. I printed it off a few days ago and had fun trying to get the gist of it down. Garibaldi stuff is a lot of fun to practice, and it's really cool that you put the work...

Re: Beginner Jazz

It wouldn't happen to be the one that you found on Craigslist a couple days ago, would it? If you're still interested in that one (in Cleveland), give me a call and I'll be glad to help you out. ...

Re: rudiment book help

I like The Rudimental Cookbook by Edward Freytag. It has a lot of good rudimental snare solos, ranging in difficulty from beginner to very advanced. It's published by Row-Loff.

Re: Executing Rudiments On looser heads/drums with more rebound

Didn't know that - that's an interesting fact. I still disagree with that, though. I respect Buddy Rich as much as the next guy, but I don't take everything he says as gospel. What about you - do...

Re: Executing Rudiments On looser heads/drums with more rebound

Duck is right. Don't change your drum sound to accommodate your technique - that is backwards. Just develop your technique so that you can play the rudiments you want to play on any surface.

Re: Best way to practice bouncing on paradiddles?

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I had to chime in. I'm really surprised at all the posts in here talking about rebound and bouncing the double in a paradiddle. I didn't learn paradiddles...

Re: notation program / software

Hi Raphael,

I recommend you search online for Finale Notepad 2008. As far as I know, Finale Notepad 2008 was the last version of Notepad to be completely free (although I think the newer...

Re: Need Help With My Grip

Regarding the fulcrum question - that's one of those debatable things that is different based on your technique and style. It can be the first joint of the index finger, the second joint of the...

Re: What Books to use for Lessons?

I use bits and pieces of a bunch of resources and have never really committed to using a single book, but I will second the previously mentioned "Funky Primer" book. It basically does what you asked...

Re: Calises and blisters!

Calluses, actually - I wouldn't have thought so either but I googled it. It was kind of confusing. Anyway, "callous" is an adjective, and "callus" is a noun.

Re: Calises and blisters!

^ I don't disagree with you on that in general, but once again it is a difference with marching technique. That simply isn't a factor. On a marching drum with a tight kevlar head, you can hit the...

I wasn't thinking right when I said that - I should have said on the ring finger, where the stick sits and bounces around. Matt, I will be the first one to say you know more about this stuff than I...

Re: Vocab-to-action verification

Yes. Rimshot = hitting head and rim at the same time. A drier, punchier sound is achieved by playing in the center of the head. By pulling the stick back some and playing closer to the edge, you...

Re: Practicing With Different Sized Sticks?

I'm not saying it's good or bad for muscle building, but just to clarify, I'm pretty sure Mayer's intent in the dvd was NOT to demonstrate using metal sticks for muscle building, but for practicing...
