Re: Switching Gear DURING a set.

I'll sometimes change snare tuning during a set, otherwise my gear usually stays the same. I think it's good to mix it up if the track calls for it... e.g. a nice sizzle ride for a quieter song, then...

Re: Creating MIDI drum files on Android

I've played around with FL Studio Mobile... it has MIDI import and export, so you'll be able program drums then export as MIDI. It's really feature-rich for a mobile app, well worth checking out...

Re: Playing shaker with a drumkit

I've done it live with electronic pads with good outcome (Yamaha DTX-12), sometimes playing it live myself, or triggering a shaker loop on and off.

So I can help with e-drumming questions, but...

Re: Recording tips for newer drummers: The studio is *very* different to live/rehearsal

Good tip! If you can be around for the editing stage (or even do it yourself), you'll be much happier with the end result.

You're right it can be really difficult for newer drummers to adjust...

Re: Recording tips for newer drummers: The studio is *very* different to live/rehearsal

A lot of my projects have been the same - one day set aside just for drums. By the time all the gear is set up and tested (mics, kit, etc), plus doing 10+ songs across a day (usually 2-3 takes per...

Re: Recording tips for newer drummers: The studio is *very* different to live/rehearsal

Exactly - pretty much every drummer I speak to has had to learn this stuff "the hard way", so hopefully we can get a discussion going and share some really useful knowledge.

Re: Recording tips for newer drummers: The studio is *very* different to live/rehearsal

True! There's a difference between knowing something intellectually, and actually understanding/feeling it first-hand.

Recording tips for newer drummers: The studio is *very* different to live/rehearsal

There's info on just about everything online, but something really lacking is how new(er) drummers should approach their first recording experience.

Most people learn the hard way and kind of...

Re: Snare: Tight Vs Loose bottom head

I'm not a huge fan of really tight resonant heads (at least on my own snares) - mine float around the medium level (sometimes tight-medium, sometimes loose-medium), depending on the situation.

Re: Hal Blaine: Drum Fills Come From Within

An interesting read - thanks for sharing!

I'm not sure that playing "cooly" in rehearsals and then really going for it in the studio would work for everyone...
Sometimes I catch myself doing the...

Re: Items that will help reduce volume of drums

If you're looking to treat the room, you'll end up spending a LOT of money. I'm not sure about the wedges you're talking about, but I think if you're on a budget then the best thing is to look at...

Re: Best ways to chart and memorize song's

One thing I've done in the past is write the general beat on one line, then write out the fills or variations in tiny sections on the line(s) below that, with a little number above them so I know...

Re: Syncing drums & music on Android

There's an android app called Triller that allows you to make music videos, this could work. Or check the similar apps section if you search for it.

Re: To stuff of not to stuff?

The SKI and Regulator should stop things from getting too out of control without needing the pillow.

I'd take the pillow along just in case though.... test it out with no stuffing during...

Re: Cop shows up for noise complaint, sits in on the kit

Whenever the cops showed up to our places, they'd just tell us to turn it down!

Re: Ear 'popping' and tinnitus

To anyone starting out who reads this thread... it is SUPER important to look after your ears! Get some good earplugs or something. You'll thank yourself in the future.

Re: Practicing Dynamics

I actually just wrote an article on this! Something that helped me a LOT when I was starting was this:
Hit 4 things all at the same time at medium volume (e.g. snare, floor tom, hi hat pedal, bass...

Strange! I just tried popping my ears but mine is still there (it always is, but really mild).

This is complete speculation (but it got me thinking): I recall reading that tinitus is caused in...

Re: Fat snare tuning preference: all loose or half loose batter head?

I've made o-rings before but never a solid BFSD style circle from old heads, I'll give it a try this weekend!

Good way to put it - it definitely depends what you're going for... I like the...
