The Steve Ferrone Signature snare drum by Pearl (14X6.5) sounds really cool. Versatile and extremely funky when properly tuned ! Cracking rimshots.
My 12X7 Mapex is cool too.

I think that if it hurts you, it's because you grip isn't lose enough. The fulcrum is between the palm and the thumb : your other fingers are just here to "cradle" the stick. Watch Dave Weckl's How...

Solid grooves by Dieter Petereit and Herb Quick covers many styles and contains some great ideas, although it can feel a little bit old-fashioned.

I totaly agree with Centralzeke : the best thing to do is to find a good teacher. The double -stroke roll is a thing you can master only by seeing somebody doing it !
