Re: Pecking order

I honestly don't know why anyone would put with this s--- and even worse want to become a pro after experiencing it. Really... a pecking order, for a hole-in-the-wall blues jam? Give me a break. The...

Re: Touring drummer payscale?

Haha, for the majority, neither! Though you don't have to pay rent, I imagine you have no idea how much it costs to actually rent one of those tour buses to begin with.

Re: John Bonham's old Car - Where should it go?

The rocknroll hall of fame... don't they already have his green sparkle kit?

Re: John Bonham tuning

I always find it hilarious when drummers come in critiquing "oh, why would you try to sound like Bonham, be original!" all the while they try to play, sound, and tune like Gavin Harrison, Purdie,...

Re: Why?

I think the big disconnect is, no one is suggesting for musicians to play "sloppy". There's nothing better to me than a tight band that grooves. Nothing in there requires a met. No one's suggesting...

Re: Why?

Because metronomed music sucks, and I'm not alone. I still find it amazing that drummers are willing and often times want to give up that part of what makes them useful in a band. Might as well be...

Re: Sitting in (deputising) for another drummer

Knock their socks off and they'll call you for more.

Re: Dynamic for overhead

I found the SM57 to be quite punchy as an overhead and give quite a sweet-sounding essence to the drums. Compared to a condensor though it doesn't capture the warmth-ness and subtlety of the kit.

Re: Which drummer are you?

I guess I'm a journeyman waiting for the opportunity to become a band member. I don't like being a fill-in drummer compared to being a member of a band which is just more comfortable for me.

Re: Why no modern single/3-ply shells?

I've studied this as well. From what I've gathered there's a few companies you can get vintage-sounding shells.

Ludwig classic is 3-ply with rerings but using maple wood, so they sound more like...

Re: Drum or Cymbal?

A cheap kit with good heads will sound decent. This is because the drumheads accounts for at least half of the sound the drum makes. So if you're willing to swap all the heads, a cheap kit is the way...

Re: New product that really works! :-)

More stuff!

Honestly, I use a snare stand for my tom and have only noticed choking when I tighten the basket. If I leave it loose, I mean really loose so it's just laying on the stand, it...

Re: Can musical genius be hereditary?

The film "Ratatouille" said it best: "Not everyone can be a great chef, but a great chef can come from anywhere."

And what's with the Kenny G bashing? The musical snobbery on this site is on...

Re: Recording old-school

Don't feel discouraged. A number of modern bands got their start after minimally recording a debut album similar to what you are planning to do. White Stripes and Black Keys come to mind..

Re: Recording old-school

If you're going 2 or 3 mics, I'd recommend not recording in stereo but mono. Then you can do some eq/pan/spread magic to turn the mono to a bigger stereo sound.

If I had 2 mics, I'd have 1...

Re: Darn snare buzz

Record your drumset as best you can and see if the buzz is really there or more in your head. See how much the buzz sound actually carries the further you move away from your kit.

Re: Questions about 4 piece drum set up. What do you think?

My experience was actually quite the opposite. When I went from a 5- to a 4-piece it expanded my creativity because I was forced to try to create fresh sounds from a limited palette. It simplified my...

Re: Sucking this bad should be illegal.

Hey dude, that's why I've been recording every practice for the last 3 weeks. I noticed I improve the most by listening to my playback. But yeah, some days I play like an ass. Like, my arms are...

Re: Become a Session Drummer

I think there's a paradigm shift in how music is made now compared to in the 60's-80's. The biggest factor is drummers can get a good sounding kit relatively cheaply and for the music that's popular...

Re: Does anyone have any experience with those USB audio interfaces?

That is quite good but more than what OP needs. It sounds like he has a mixer and just wants to put the stereo out- on tape, or computer in this case.

Re: Which brass snare should I buy??

If you have the money go for the BB. If not, like me, I went for the Pearl Brass Sensitone. It's a great sounding drum, records beautifully. I use a LM402 for live settings though.

Re: Some American History....and we've been here before!

That's an awesome find, those guys sounded great. Are those instruments replicas, or original shells? And I'm assuming they were using calf-skin heads?
