Re: Reinforcing rings

I agree with the conventional wisdom that the Manufacturer knows and understands what's best for their product and why.

I have some "high-end" wooden snares from various builders and while some...

Re: Would you uproot to go where the music is?

Not crazy at all, I did just that in the mid 80's. Moved from a small New England town that looked like a Norman Rockwell painting down to New Orleans. The culture shock took quite awhile to...

Re: Forced to retire?

Keep the gear and chops in shape just in case the rural life (or marriage) doesn't work out.

Re: It is your band, who do you pick for lead singer?

This is a fun idea!

*The incomparable Diane Schuur -who has an amazing range and can swing like nobody's business.
* Peter Gabriel
*Justin Hayward (because I've always loved the Moodies)

This is such a cool idea and what an amazingly generous gift!

Re: Your Holy Grail

One of the originals built by Billy himself would be awesome, but I could probably buy a new set of German made Sonor's for the cost of this collectable.

Re: Ludwig Super Sensitive or Hammered Bronze

Congrats on getting one of the most played and recorded snares in history!
My advice (if the cure for Ludwig snares hasn't been found) is to save up for a Black Beauty. That way you'd already...

Re: Your Holy Grail

I have some wonderful snares that I enjoy playing and owning, but my "holy grail" would probably be an original Billy Gladstone snare drum. If I could ever find one and afford it!

Re: That special place between swing and straight

The boogie boogie walking line being played on the electric guitar in Jailhouse Rock is also an example of that special groove.
It's a wonderful tension.

Re: Want to go to Berklee for Music Ed degree - unrealistic?

They have a fairly comprehensive website and you can contact the school. They would steer you best as to what you would need.
A visit to the school is a good idea as well.
I wish I had gone there...

Re: Dilemma : what should I sell?

Wait it out. Work some more to save some money and keep your gear. I regret gear that I've sold in the past.
Wives come and go but a good drum can last a lifetime.

Re: Was just accepted into music school... any tips all of you vets?

A lot of good advice from the drumming/musician angle. I'd like to recommend something a little different that I wish I had learned thirty years ago when going to music school.

Re: What are your favourite recorded drumsounds?

The drums on Paul Simon's "Boy in the Bubble" they're really prominent in the mix, they sound like recording customs and the snare is a mix of live and triggered sample.

Steve Smith's drums on...

Congrats to you and your wife. Daughters are awesome.
What really impressed me about this image is that it looks like it could've been made fifty years ago other than the current VF flag logo....

Re: Do You Like Metal Snares?

I love metal snares and their sonic characteristics. In this video, many of us will identify a Ludwig aluminum or a Black Beauty's sound quite easily. They're very familiar to the ears.
