Re: Gretsch renown '57 or Tama superstar Hyper Drive or something else

Great choice -- can't go wrong with Renown. The '57 looks great onstage!

Love my Cherry Burst Renown kit.

Re: New Colors for Gretsch 2011

The black sparkle is pretty cool, but Cherry Burst is still my favorite. Uber classy color over natural wood grain.

Re: Help finding Gretsch Renown Maple Snare

I ordered a 5-piece Renown Maple Groove CB kit last January - but the snare was on backorder. It took 5 months to get the snare from Gretsch, but it's a beauty and worth the wait. At least you have a...

I've got the 16x20 and it's plenty punchy.

Re: Ludwig vs. Pearl vs. Gretsch

Renowns are excellent. Spend the extra cash on the best cymbals you can afford.

Re: Gretsch Renown...unfair to call it "mid-level"?

I've had my Renown Groove 5-piece 10/12/14/20/snare kit for 6 weeks and it's great. It was $1450 shipped new from massmusic.net, although the snare is backordered 3 months from Gretsch, so I picked...

Re: Pearl MCX vs Gretsch USA Maple

If it's a nitrocellulose lacquer finish, you could buff it out to gorgeous gloss.

Go for the Gretsch USA.

Re: The good drums for this set list

If you think that the Renown Maple Rock kit may be too loud, you could consider the Renown Maple Groove size with smaller toms and 20" kick that still rocks.

Re: HELP!!! Pearl MCX or Gretch Maple Renown!

The inside cut is 30 degrees and the head makes contact with a rounded edge. I'd have to take off a head to confirm, but I recall that the outer rounded bearing edge comprises several plies, not just...

Re: Starter kit, around $500, new or used?

The Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz has an 18 x 14 kick. It's a mahogany shell kit that you can find for $500 but then you need hardware/cymbals. It might be overkill for a 7-year-old but it's not a...

Re: List of worthwhile Drum kits!

Gretsch Catalina Maple sounds great to me. You can find kits on Ebay for $550 and get a good Gibraltar 5601 hardware pack for $275.

Re: The best $1500 can buy...

$550 Gretsch Catalina Maple, under $300 for hardware, use the rest for some good heads and good used cymbals and you can get some change back from your $1500.

Sonor is also great.
