Re: Practicing in an apartment without using an e-kit

Yeah I do that with the cymbals sometimes, but I'm actually going to ditch the towels, strip down to just a pair of hats and my quietest ride and use lighter sticks. I also may try tala wands.

I...

Re: Practicing in an apartment without using an e-kit

I'm in the same situation. I was using a Yamaha DTX500 but still not happy with the feel or the sound. I actually missed the feel of sitting behind an acoustic set more than anything if I had to...

Re: Gretsch From the NAMM Show

Right, for instance the Sycamore snare at Drum Center of Portsmouth is $1300. Still a crazy amount of money. I know some custom builders who could get a solid shell from Vaughncraft and make a drum...

Re: Stolen Drums, a long, frustrating story

Actually they do list individual prices and have for a while.

He would have paid $990 if he bought them new...

Re: Ricky Lawson

He hasn't passed yet. There is another thread on this. There were reports that he did pass but they're backing off.

Re: I just met Jojo Mayer and......

I saw him a few years ago and he was fairly standoffish. But, he said he had been sick (and he looked like he had been through hell so I didn't doubt it), so I gave him a pass.

Re: Has anyone tried the Abe Laboriel Jr. style of having their drum kit?

It's funny that you say that because on the Hurricane Sandy Concert Abe was back to a traditional setup.

Re: Speaking of Tony Williams....

The whole thing is on YouTube though Parts 1 & 2 don't seem to pick up where the previous leaves off, but still, go to keepvid.com save it and burn it

Re: Ludwig Carl Palmer Signature Snare

Yes. I was very surprised at the versatility of this snare given the shallow size.

Re: How hard do you try to keep your kit in pristine condition?

I try to keep my drums looking new, I dust them and wipe them down when they need it. But dings do happen. I've already got some dings on my USA Custom batter bass drum hoop from the snare bumping...

Re: 20" kick - pedal height?

I leave my beater at the same height for all bass drum sizes, and I play an 18" without a riser sometimes. Hitting off center offers more tone than hitting directly center. I say keep the height...

Re: Which DW badges are which?

I was able to find someone mention that it's a DW "Workshop" series that they did. I think it's a pre-Pacific entry/intermediate level.

Re: Any big name drummers do something to rub you the wrong way?

Well remember that he may have been required to do a sales pitch and while it was still inappropriate, it was an opportunity to do what his contract might require him to do.

Re: Gretsch USA customs with triple flange hoops... or is that just sacrilage?

No. They'll still have a unique sound of their own. I love my USA's but sometimes I do feel like I get tired of the attack of the die-cast hoop. I may try this, at least on the batter side.

Re: I am increasingly becoming a fan of Keith Carlok

I was fortunate enough to see Keith at a clinic put on by Drum Center of Portsmouth a few months ago. He was INCREDIBLE. The power that he has in his videos is nothing compared to seeing him live. He...

Re: Splash cymbal or not?????

I use a Bosphorus 11" Traditional splash as a small crash. It's fast and darker/lower pitched than you'd expect so it's fairly versatile.

Re: are splash holders universal?

Be more specific. If you mean a cymbal arm with a clamp on it, then yes, it will fit on just about any stand. .

Re: Tunning a snare with die-cast hoops (is it different?)

Diecast hoops in my experience are a little more precise when it comes to tuning. But since you're new, what you might want to do is pay attention to the harmonics that are being produced when you...

Re: Ludwig horror stories?

Everyone seems to get different dates from different companies. I just ordered a Gretsch USA Cusstom in a satin finish in 20/12/14 sizes that was placed March 5. Someone on cymbalholic ordered pretty...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Club Rock Question!

A 26" head is going to vibrate slower than a 24" but not by much. To me, one bass drum being harder to play than another comes down to depth, but when you're talking 16" vs. 18" deep, it's not a big...

Re: Sonor's build quality- not what it used to be.

The holes in the bearing edge wouldn't concern me. What I'm betting they are is just that particular ply being just a smidge too short so it doesn't fully join at the same. A lot of times filler will...

Re: Mapex Saturn Delamination ?? WTF??

Subscribed.

It looks like most of the delaminations are on the tom mount side? Is that the case?
