Re: Open handed newbie here

Same here. I've played open and closed since day one, but only recently started actually working on better dynamics with my left.

I wouldn't say I'm totally ambidextrous, I mainly just play the...

Re: Getting lazy and playing heel down

Not me. Heel down is more work to me. I sometimes practice heel down just to increase endurance.

But heel up is effortless. I keep my feet basically horizontal to the floor, so "heel up" to me...

Re: Drumming dreams

I remember only one. I was about to do my sound check for a concert with Van Halen (I don't know why it was VH). I remember the kit being massive. But we never got around to playing! I spent the...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

Mesh heads and other e-drum surfaces can be a pain in the ass. You waste energy just trying to control the rebound. There's more to fast double bass than flat out speed. You need to be able to stop...

Re: Timing test

880/901/880/911 mouse
908/916/917/916 spacebar

Using the mouse, I found it much more accurate to hold above and tap rather than rest on the button and click.

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

lefty2, I'm a metal drummer and fan, but honestly except for the really complex time changes and polyrhythms that some of the newer guys are playing, nothing in metal actually blows me away. Kollias...

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

It probably doesn't help that the song is boring and just awful and that guitar tone makes me want to pull my eyes out through my ears (or something).

Nothing George did would sound good in that...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

Not sure how much, but always more than I have now.

I see what you're saying though. At some point you're playing so "out there" that it won't register with even many experienced musicians, let...

Re: Playing with a double bass pedal

They do.
Some people are amazing with either or both. I don't use either although I think heel toe is very practical for doing patterns that can be awkward for single strokes.

I do not like to...

Re: Does independence just click one day?

Independence can just click one day, but in stages. There's always more independence to achieve.

Re: Joey Jordison

It's a tragic irony that his aggressive double bass is what fanboys and haters alike focus on the most. Jordison's strength is creative, massive grooves that are both interesting and fitting.

Re: Phil Rudd pleads guilty

I'm pretty sure Rudd was the first drummer I heard (or noticed) accenting with the crashes on the snare upbeats and offbeats so prominently that the song(s) would be entirely different without it.

Re: Too Old To Play???

I'm not sure I'd call drumming good exercise in a therapeutic sense. I'd go so far as to say you have to go to some lengths to keep it from actually being bad for you. When drumming you spend too...

Re: Right foot heel up technique goes "missing" after 3 week tour.

I've gone through this more than once. One thing that helps me is switching pedals for a few days then going back to my regular setup. It's like a reboot.

On a side note, it seems to me like for...

Re: Video Camera Advice

I realy like the entry level GoPro. The wide angle gets everything you need in frame, and it's fantastic in low light situations which is great for indoors.

Re: Drinking and Drumming

Former bass player would get smashed at band practice, learned all our songs drunk and had to be drunk at gigs to remember them.

Re: How to stop playing slightly ahead of the beat?

Lots of good posts regarding pushing/pulling the beat, however if someone is trying to play on the beat yet plays ahead of the beat, then there's a problem.

I've found that my timing is better...

Re: What's your favorite drumset category? Drums, cymbals or hardware

Toms and crash cymbals.

Everything else (snare, kick, ride, etc) needs to sound right, but beyond that I don't obsess over them. Great sounding toms and crashes - obsession.

Re: Foot Pedal :: Too Painful

Could be that your foot is at too much of an incline (heel too low).

Re: Unreliable band members

Had a lead singer with bipolar disorder. That sucked sometimes. But otherwise great voice, great stage presence, and pretty gifted musically for someone with zero training.

Never knew what he was...

Re: Let down by a drummer with chops but no ability

It's a shame that's what he's best known for. His fast double bass is actually quite sloppy (because he often playes just beyond his actual limit).

The rest of his drumming is creative,...

You could embrace the rumbling rebound and incorporate it into your own, new style.

I can see your youtube videos lessons already:
