Re: New Bill Bruford Conversation

Very good interview. Bruford sounds so young!

I also checked out the recent ep with John Robinson, which is also really interesting. Kudos to the interviewer Joe Wong, who makes some very good...

Re: Playing different UNRELATED tempo's simultaneously?

This is what two slightly different tempos do to a rhythm:

Re: Playing different UNRELATED tempo's simultaneously?

One simple version would be playing an ostinato with your feet, and then letting your hands go on the snare either completely random or speeding up or down off the tempo grid.

It's a gimmick some...

Solid as a rock - Ashford and Simpson

Walking in Memphis - Cher

Re: Is there a website with drumless tracks?

Some excellent stuff on there, I use the Chameleon track a lot for practice, here's a bit of Groove Study 8 (second page) over the riff;

Re: Dante Agostini

Thanks for this information!

I wonder if any of the drummers in the video are still active today, maybe even here on the forums?

Dante Agostini

Found an old book by Dante Agostini, so I looked him up:

I'm not a big fan of composed drum pieces, but these unison kit players sound really good.

Re: Does drumming get easier?

Yes it certainly gets easier to work out what is going on in fills. From my own experience it is much more difficult to then play the fill with the accuracy and dynamics required! That's the really...

Re: Jazz Drum Tuning

It's not only the tuning that makes the classic jazz sound, but also the way the toms were made in the 50s and 60s. The classic sound is 'old Gretsches', with that warm boingy tom tone you can...

Re: Damage control: take care of your stuff

What I don't like is a crash cymbal swinging like mad, and when you want to hit it more than once it'll be all over the place. And I only use one crash mostly. Better to have it in check!

Re: What's the deal with Nicko McBrain's name?

It may be because in Scottish accent "brain" almost sounds the same as Brian, so he's probably the descendant of Brian really!

Re: Displacing a groove by 1/16th note - how do you do it?!

Displacement exercises (e.g. Garibaldi) should be done to music loops instead of a dry click, then it makes sense.

You can displace a groove 16 times and end up where you started. With real music...

Re: SKF Blog: Freddie Gruber Has No Recordings; How Do We Know He Can Teach?

Well there (at about 1:00) is a recording of a young FG by Jim Chapin! Sounds really good to me, exactly the kind of soloing I like to hear.

A glimpse into the past. Many thanks for providing this...

Getting to grips with compression and levels

Having done some trial and error using compression on recorded drums I really didn't know how it all worked. But this explains it quite well:

Re: How often should I replace drum heads?

depends on how hard you hit. Re-tuning should be done regularly, starting from slack. You'll see clearly dents and wrinkles in the centre which will kill the tone, but otherwise, if there is no...

Re: HELP with Beat " me and julio "

There are no drums on the original recording...

If you want to add some maybe try a just bass drum on 2 and 4, like a sparse reggae beat, with some 16ths on the hihat maybe?

Snare accents and backbeats sound lots better with rimshots, but sometimes the processed sound isn't that different. Is there something the sound engineer should do to make rimshots happen?
