Re: Buzzing techniques
This is a very good way to go about it. I found improvements fairly quickly doing something quite similar after a month.

Re: pro drummers with bad technique
If you can get your ideas out the way you want them to sound, who really cares? For example, take two of my favorite drummers out there today, Tain Watts and Ari Hoenig. Tain has great technique, he...

Re: Who would you like to sit and drum with?
I'd like to sit down with Billy Hart again. That guy sounds and looks like he's channeling ancient gods or something, it's really great. Same thing goes with Elvin, although not "again".

Re: Triplet Fills
The only crossover problem with the fill may be the last triplet, but that's not a big one. If you practice the fill for two minutes slow, you should be on the path to righteousness without sticks...

Yeah man... Just rock yourself ten great jazz recordings to start (PM me if you want some recommendations), Ted Reed's syncopation, a teacher to walk you through a few ways to play the Reed, and the...

Re: 11 steps to the mozambique
Hey J, I dig the transcription.
However, I would add this if I could. These Gadd mozambiques are super cool, but they're just beats. Just beats that have no bigger concept whatsoever. If you want to...

Re: Greg Hutchinson
Hutchison is a master drummer, not my favorite though. That Young Lion thing is a little tiring to me now. No doubt a great musician though- the guy can play and swing in a league few are in.

Re: Charley Wilcoxon - The All American Drummer
Disagree, for this purpose. I've learned that whole book and it's ridiculous, really great, but I think AAD is much easier to break up into workable chunks, and they're just easier. Modern Swing...

Re: Charley Wilcoxon - The All American Drummer
That book is pretty cool. If you focus on getting every study perfect, you probably have a lifetime of work in front of you. Do them slow and focus on perfect tone from the snare, good stick heights,...

Yeah, Lang's done a million gigs with heavy pop acts. He has a groove of doom, but he's doing the technical thing now, which I guess is fulfilling for him. Don't mistake his abillity to play retarded...

Re: Jazz Bass hits
Playing four on the floor is useful, especially in a more bebop or straightahead context. Seriously, it's just a tap though, like a 1/4 of an inch from the head. You shouldn't be able to really hear...

Re: Hip Concept for jazz
Great ideas man.
Speaking of more ideas along this line, remove the backbeat from some of those drum and bass grooves, and you've got some stinkin' uptempo swing ideas.

Re: John Riley's Beyond Bop Three Voice Comping
Well, it really depends on the musical situation in question. In particular, what the rhythm section and the soloist are doing is determinant on what you should be doing. For example, if the bass...

One more thing to add: you should do these exercises very very slowly at first, particularly those tough last ones! If I were you, I'd repeat them over and over and over instead of running through...

Re: Want to get faster? Do 20 second sets!
Well, as far as that goes, I'm all about practicing something for five minutes, then putting it up two bpm on the metronome, or choose whatever time works for you. The way to get speed is to work on...

You really can't. It's a series of rudiments applied in (more or less) musical phrases that needs to be completed every day for a while.

Hey man,
Actually, I did the ritual for a month and a half with brushes. It's a great idea. However, I quit it because I'm doing some pipe band type snare exercises for technique stuff.
Of course,...
