Re: Drum Size Question

I’m not sure exactly where “standard” depth sizes came from - something about the size of hat boxes back in the day, but not sure about that...

I will say though, that 8” depth for a 12” tom is...

Re: Letting go vs focusing

Interesting... I bet you could have played well with SRV! If you’re listening to the band first and yourself second - that’s how you get into the music. When drummers “let go” - they’re listening...

Re: Letting go vs focusing

I got this idea from Billy Ward - he calls it “Practice/Playing”. It’s a simple exercise, but can be taken to many places, it’s up to you! Without thinking, play a simple melody on the kit - just a...

Re: Letting go vs focusing

We all need to practice form the the Left side and the Right side of our brain. Unfortunately, almost everyone only practices from the Left (analytical) side of their brain, so when it’s time for a...

I’ve had a Dunnett for 10 years now, and never had any quality issues.

I”m not sure which era of the Dunnett throw that you have - since I’ve had my drum, I’ve replaced the throw with two...

Re: Drumsticks for stick control

Experiment with sticks that fit in your hand well and work for the type of music you’re playing. You’ll feel more control if the sticks feel good in your hands.

On the pad I use Vic Firth "Dom’s...

Not to hijack - but another really cool new album is Screaming Headless Torso’s “Code Red” I discovered these two albums on the same day, and they’re kind of fun to listen to back to back. Both...

IMO Billy Ward really covers these concepts well in both of his DVDs - what he calls "practice-playing “ is a great way to develop your own voice...

Re: Now a morning drummer

That’s cool that you figured out a way to practice within your new schedule. I was never a morning person, but early morning practice is the only steady time that I can get on the kit.

All good...

Re: leaving the kick beater on the bass head?

I haven’t seen Jojo’s DVD - but it’s probably good.

Here are a couple of things to try:
1. Start by playing heel down. After you achieve some strength and coordination, your heel-up playing will...

Re: Playing 15 years, terrible stick control

Without seeing your hands, it’s hard to give specific advice - but revamping your grip will probably help. It might feel like starting over, but I’ve seen players make the adjustments pretty quickly...

Re: Playing with exaggerated dynamics.

I’d say start with Pratt’s “14 Modern Contest Solos” - pieces like “Drum Corps on Parade” are fun to play and will give you lots of dynamics to work with. “The New Pratt Book” is also good.
