Re: Yamaha Recording Customs - Help!!

Black drums are totally cool, IMO. Classy and timeless.

Re: Strange tom phenomenon

Thanks but the pic is a bit deceiving. The wrap has some scratches and there is some pitting on the lugs here and there. But all in all it is pretty good for a 45-ish year old kit. In subdued...

Re: Strange tom phenomenon

I thought of that and will try tomorrow. I always play gigs on carpet anyway.

Re: Strange tom phenomenon

I tried removing only the tom and the tom and holder. Both the same result.

The 13 sounds fine alone on either side. That's good 'cause as a 4-piece I would probably use the 13 more. But I would...

Strange tom phenomenon

I recently got a vintage 70's Pearl wood-fiberglass kit 12-13-16-22. It sounds great but there's this weird thing with the toms. It has the old hex-rod holders. When both toms are on the mounts they...

Re: Music: Nature or Nurture?

I think others in my family have musical talent that they simply didn't develop. I chose to learn the drums at 12 (later guitar too) and learned quickly. I had naturally good rhythm and it helped a...

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

They overdubbed the cymbals on the first Slayer record (Show No Mercy). It's really obvious once you know. Might work for Abba but it's dumb in a metal context.

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

Lars didn't use a ride for a while. There's no ride on the black album and I think on Justice too.

Brought it back on Load.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Jazz or Pacific Concept Classic Bop

Your first 2 points are a matter of aesthetic and not function. They work just fine.

3 is factually wrong. Cat Clubs have 12.7mm L-arms like pro Gretsch.

Agreed about the snare.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Jazz or Pacific Concept Classic Bop

1. They're 1.6mm hoops. Pretty standard. No problem here.
2. My floor tom brackets work fine. They're the diamond bracket with eye bolt inside. No slippage at all.
3. Not yet thankfully.
4. Again...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Jazz or Pacific Concept Classic Bop

What hardware are you referring to? Everything works fine on mine. Tom holder is great. Drums tune. Floor tom legs hold. I don't understand.

Re: Mounting toms on bass drum vs virgin bass drum

For gigging convenience I prefer the tom(s) on the bass drum. I can use very light cymbal stands that way because they don't have to hold toms too. I like to keep my hardware bag as light as...

Re: What is your least favorite concession you made in your set up?

I use a 4-piece most of the time and I find there isn't really any concession with this setup (also true of 1 up, 2 down). Everything has its own spot. As soon as you start adding toms up front...

Re: Probably getting my kick drum cut down - what size?

20x14 is such a great size. I have a Club Date SE in that size and it's my favorite bass drum. It has such a great deep punch that impresses me every time I play it.

I vote for 14" big time.

Re: It's official! I'm a Metal Head!

I'm kind of in the opposite boat where I played all that heavy stuff for years and years and now I'm playing Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles, etc.

Enjoy it, it's loads of fun. Do any stick...

Re: Your Favorite COB Snare

I have the G4160 5x14 and it sounds great. The rimshot has this great CHOP! sound that I love. This is the only brass snare I've ever owned so I can't make comparisons but it's really a joy to play....

Re: And I got a rack!

I think it looks good. And it's a good system if you're mounting at least 2 toms and 2 cymbals which you are along with a virgin kick. This is probably what I would go with too (more likely the...

Re: Does everyone go through a drum rack phase?

Oh yeah. I went through a couple of rack phases. One in the early 90's when I used a bigger kit and I had one about 7 or 8 years ago but it was a Stealth. I used it a bit but it eventually became...

Re: New gretch catalina club drums

Beautiful kit, congrats.

I usually tell people who buy Cat Clubs to get a new bass drum batter head. The stock head is not great.

Other than that just enjoy them. I have an older set and play...
