Re: New breed help

I'm not really an advocate for practicing that way. I think you'll be wasting your time chasing that particular thing before you've developed a pretty high level of proficiency with that book and...

Re: Why I don't play V-Drums

All your feelings about how lame this is are correct. This video is pretty much the essence of what happens when you take away the live instrument.

Who was playing with Tony Bennett, Gregg Field?

Re: Questions to ask prospective drum teacher?

I don't think you need to ask them anything, if you've concluded that they're qualified. You're not really in a position where you will be able to judge who is actually the best teacher, so I would...

Well, he's well-armed. I like the antique Webley service revolver, too.

Re: shuffle is hard...

I think the reason people have a hard time with this feel is that they're trying to make it using some kind of soft-loud compound stroke, which tends to be fatigue-inducing, and make the accents fall...

Re: shuffle is hard...

Ugh, sorry, I totally disagree with that way of playing the cymbal-- that's not a legitimate technique as far as I'm concerned. That's something he made up in the practice room.

Re: Thoughts on YouTube Covers?

They're fine-- a good low-risk way for students to get to play for people. And it's good for people who want to play the drums, but not necessarily play music and perform for real, to have an outlet....

Re: Where to download or buy drum sheet music

I wish people like this would follow up on their posts-- I'm curious about how this worked out. It's kind of lame to just pop in for some free information and then vanish.

Re: What do you want your guitar player to know?

Here are a few things:

Take your rhythm guitarist job/role seriously.
Know that keeping time is as much your job as it is the drummer's-- whether you're playing rhythm, leads, soloing,...

Re: Need some help with fills

That's well-observed, actually-- any dense fill without prominent accents reads to the listener as essentially a big slur. With prominent accents, they read as the accents + drum slurry. In general. ...

Re: Learning to sight read

Joey Baron has some good advice (http://shipdrummer.blogspot.com/2011/01/joey-baron-master-class-part-4-i-didnt.html#morehttp://) about that:

Re: George Lawrence Stone

Sure, you should buy it-- it's a $10 book, and you'll use it for the rest of your career. It's a huge bargain.

Re: Newbie Jazz Drummer practice routine help.

This is sort of a taste thing, but I would try putting the emphasis on all four beats-- you definitely want to know where the 1 and the 3 are, too.

Be careful of being too triplet-centric....

Re: Drums and American taxes

Doesn't being a W2 employee eliminate most of your deductions, though? They are for business expenses, and a W2 employee is not considered to be "in business." It sounds like you're not declaring any...

Re: Drums and American taxes

Follow DED's advice re: "stage" clothing-- that's kind of a classic red flag for getting audited. And contrary to your consultant's advice, you do not want to get audited, even if you come out a net...

Re: How to improve the left hand.

Get out your copy of Stick Control and work on pages 8, 9, 10, and 23 every day, playing the exercises leading with the left two or three times longer than the ones leading with the right.

Re: I have some questions

I would not use that product, and would stay away from anything to do with the associated sites-- drumeo, freedrumlessons, and the rest. Get some real drum lessons.

Re: Meshuggah - now my drumming seems trivial :(

I'm just not seeing what is causing the soul searching. It's not like you were a fan of this band, and the guy is blowing you out of the water at your own game. What I see is that somebody made a...

Re: Drum beats - are they covered by copyright?

I don't follow-- you're happy that you are free to copy somebody else's beats, but disheartened that they can copy yours?

Re: Do you color coordinate your clothes to your kit at concerts?

Don't bother, unless you're playing under white or natural light-- once you get under stage lights everything goes monochrome. And don't do it anyway, because it's a little goofy. You don't want to...

Re: Practice (not so much technique)

Maybe there are more productive ways of practicing, but I guess you haven't wasted your time-- I'm sure you've strengthened your left side a lot. I don't see any point in pursuing this line of...

Re: How to develop touch and tone on the drumset?

Second that-- spending some time learning concert percussion from somebody who knows what he's doing will help. In that world, tone quality is pretty much the main thing. You could track down the...

Re: A few questions about jazz techniques

Well, it's an honor to get to talk to you about it. I don't think I've gotten to hear your playing, but it seems like you know what you're doing.

I wouldn't worry too much about correctness--...

Re: The most 'influential' jazz albums

I guess when you create something that every single jazz musician who follows you has to master to be considered serious, you've had an influence.
