Re: In the studio

Post 3 mixes of the same song—the mix you like, the one the bassist likes, and the one the guitarist likes—and let us vote on which one we prefer. But don't let us know which is which, so it will be...

Re: Los Angeles drum shops

I've only been there once, which was a few years ago. Tons of mostly older drums staked floor to ceiling, and everything was way overpriced. I really like Yamaha cymbal stands from about 10-15 years...

Re: Los Angeles drum shops

The Sam Ash drum shop Bermuda mentioned is surprisingly good. First of all, it's a drum-only shop (all other instruments are sold from a separate building across the street). But even more...

Re: What are the stories behind famous drummers kits?

True, legend goes that Krupa worked with Zildjian to invent the splash cymbal during the big band era, though I swear I've heard choked splashes from the vaudeville era, which would likely predate...

Re: New "quiet" drum kit !

Congrats! I've been using a low volume Silentstroke/L80 kit for a few years now, and it has worked great for playing and practicing without annoying the neighbors.

One thing I would recommend...

Re: What are the stories behind famous drummers kits?

Yes, smaller bass drums surely came in handy when getting to the gig required hailing a cab and only taking what would fit. But that unique 18" BD sound does blend in well with a standup bass, which...

Re: 36" kick?

I'm posting photos from the auction for posterity's sake. So years from now, when that eBay listing is long expired, future DWers can marvel at the lengths some people will go through to...

Re: A shame, but long rumoured :(

That's the basic business model in a nutshell. Create a premium high-end kit (along with the needed support network) to attract top drummers to endorse the brand. They'll sell a few of these premium...

I don't think just any station wagon will do.

Re: Best jazz albums(with great jazz drumming)?

Instead of rattling off a laundry list of albums, I'm going to list the first two that came to mind.

Omer Avital: Abutbul Music – this is an Israeli jazz group that I first heard on a Delta flight...

Re: Musician vs Artist

I would've liked to have seen that. Who won?

P.S.: Musicians are artists, and pro golfers (and pro baseball players) are definitely athletes.

Re: Negotiating

IF the drums and heads are in good condition, then I'd get that 495 euro kit, no question. Having high quality heads like that will make a noticeable difference in sound. However if either the drums...

Re: Drum gear gimmicks that didn't really catch on

Sabian made triple hi hats that required a special HH stand, plus the cymbals were extra expensive since there were three of them. I can't for the life of me figure out why they never caught on ;)

Re: Tom angles!!!!

If you focus just on the bass drum and mounted toms, it actually looks like someone who's about to hurl!

Re: Snare wires for my Tama SLP Fat Spruce?

I just went through this exact scenario. My 5.5x14 maple snare has nearly nonexistent snare beds, and I just had to get new snares for it. I initially got 20-strand PureSound Custom Pros, but they...

Re: If Jazz was as popular as Rock ?

Not sure what you're talking about. ALL of these guys are jazz drummers, and their kits certainly aren't small.

Re: Struggling with Renowns

I should clarify my previous comment. When I said even tension all around, I should have said even pitch all around, at every tension rod. Whether or not that entails even tension is another matter,...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

You do know those chevrons can be removed, right? One of my Renown kits is a black 57 without the chevrons, and with square USA badges added. The toms looked a little plain without any sort of badge...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Hmmm I've never struggled tuning my Renowns, and I've never used a TuneBot. I've also never done any "trick" tuning with a detuned lug or anything like that. I always tune by ear to even tension all...

Re: Too Much 2 & 4

I'm a firm believer of changing things up from just a simple 2 & 4 beat wherever it makes sense to do so, even if it's just adding some color to the hi hat groove or accenting hits with the rest of...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

I never suggested 10 lugs per side for a 14" floor tom. It should be 8 per side, which is what 99.9% of floor toms use. Currently SCs use 6 per side on their 14s. And frankly, when combined with thin...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

That brings up the only thing I'd absolutely change about the Stage Customs: make sure ALL drums have the correct number of lugs. Currently, 14" floor toms and 18" bass drums have only 6 lugs per...

Re: Next Stage Custom?

Wow, I can't believe all the back and forth about whether or not to upload someone else's photo. So to put an end to it, here you go. Happy?

Now I'll be damned for all eternity.

Re: Struggling with Renowns

Ah, got it. Thanks for the clarification, and the compliment. I suppose now that you'll be tuning your toms like mine, that's the ultimate compliment! Good luck, I hope they end up sounding great...
