Re: Open-handed with traditional grip

No worries, I'm always in support of taking lessons, and I'm aware of how the majority of people play. About 89+% of them are right handed, around 10% are lefty, and 1% are like my son. Vojtech was a...

Re: Open-handed with traditional grip

Even though Vojtech did say he's a lefty, thats a little arrogant sounding. He's lefty, and plays a "right handed setup". For 1/2 or maybe 1 percent of the population, what you are describing,...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Where did that come from? We're not drawing any musical education from it. Do you get your medical education from House? Is your martial arts education from the Karate Kid? Hey, maybe you got your...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Sorry, but no. Your link to a medical drama was not comparable to Whiplash. The TV show House might have been comparably realistic, or ER, or Gray's anatomy. Or any of a good number of great...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I loved this movie. It was a drama, not a movie about drumming.

J K Simmons father was the director of a university music program and Simmons has a degree in music. In addition to that, he's...

Re: Open-handed with traditional grip

I was searching for information about this topic today and figured there was no need to start a new thread when this one exists.

My son, who plays open handed, has issue with the hi hat stand at...

Re: SNARE TUNING

I do this:

Loosen snare throw to about 1/3 or 1/4 tension by turns.
Turn snare throw to off.
Turn drum over.
Thread ribbons/cords/wires through the two clamps.
Position snare wires so they...

Re: SNARE TUNING

I can't comment on the ghost notes, but I also tried cranking the heads to decrease sympathetic buzz. Then I found that tuning the snare's pitch to a note which isn't sympathetic to the other drums...

Re: recommendations for new set

I'd wait till after Christmas and watch both ebay and craigslist for a used set of starclassics, renowns, or similar.

Re: An attempt at a policy change here

I'll trust Anon's opinion more than all of you posters who didn't even see the thread. Shemp may have been mistaken about Andy's intent, and he may have expressed it in a rude way, but he wasn't...

Re: An attempt at a policy change here

As a woodworker, I truly appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into Guru drums, and I love Andy's passion.

Andy's passion and multiple posts clearly translated into quite a bit of...

Re: Gift for my Band Director

Seems to me that she is getting a gift that shows support for something the band director feels passionate about. Making that contribution is supportive and expresses appreciation. It would be...

Re: How Many Shells, What Shells, and What Cymbals and Hardware......

Except we typically value material goods we pay for more, for some illogical reason.

This could be the mother of all "kits", but probably isn't ;)

Re: Christmas present pondering

Unexpectedly won two ebay auctions
Soul Tone 10" splash/china stack
Sabian 13" El Sabor Splash
Pretty cymbals.
I may have to give one of those to his cousin who also plays as a...

Re: Christmas present pondering

Thanks, he does like the idea of a splash. It's one of the drum items he's commented on when he's seen them. Thinks they are "cool".

Re: Beginner Drum Building

You don't need an enormous number of tools just to make stave drums, but the ones you need are fairly expensive since you have to be quite accurate on your angles. At a minimum you'll need a good...

Re: Christmas present pondering

Hi Dutch,

I don't know cymbals that well, but china's always sound like like oscar's trash can lid on sesame street. I'm not sure he'd like one.

I know. Negligent parenting.

Re: Christmas present pondering

Thanks. I was guessing medium heavy since rides seem to be heavier than crashes. At least what I've seen, which isn't a lot. Figured a heavier crash might be more rideable.

On the new thing,...

Christmas present pondering

So I considered putting this in the cymbal section, because that's what I'm leaning towards, but decided to post here since maybe someone has a better idea.

My son is playing a 5 piece kit 2 up, 1...

Re: How do you first start learning fills?

I'll request a demonstration on Tuesday (next lesson).
It's really this "Triplet rolls are another animal altogether. You're doubling each hand in triplet rate." that has me confused.

Is a...
