DW-doug, just go out and play a few dw models. if your ears enjoy the sound of a particular model, go for it! also, don't sleep on the Performance series, ive played them and they do...

they had BOXES of them at GC during the holidays. they just couldnt sell them. im glad you think that snare drum is good. tama makes good snare drums, high and low.

SSC means Specialized Shell Configuration. it just a fancy way of saying how the shell is made.

the performance series shells are made HVX
the design series shells are HVLT
collectors series...

VLT was produced in attempts to make a lower pitch sound drum kit. X-shells were later produced to drop the pitch down even more. idk if its true or not between the two but i can definitely mess with...

two of the kits you mentioned are good (the catalina and the stage custom) but im not sure about the elements kit. A lot of people on here have the stage...
