Re: Talk about a drumming revelation you've had

It's a small thing and probably a "well, DUH!" thing for most of you... but I more or less cured my tendency to rush fills when I realized that I had as much time to complete the fill as I had time...

Re: What's actually going well for you in your world of music?

I love the tone of this thread. Sounds like you fellas are doing alright!

As for me, the band that I've been part of for 18 months is really starting to come together. We've been gigging steadily...

Re: Did recording yourself make you a better player, and how?

Thanks for the input, all. Tons of useful stuff in here.

I played around with mic positioning and drum tuning last night and got a better overall sound. There's no end to the futzing I could do,...

Did recording yourself make you a better player, and how?

Self explanatory question, I suppose.

I bought a 7-piece mic kit recently and began recording my practice sessions. The results were unsettling and eye-opening, to say the least.

I'm surprised...

Re: Can you tell a big difference?

Interesting take, Jim. My holy grail would be a drum sound that wouldn't be out of place on a Steely Dan record.

Re: Can you tell a big difference?

Oh, good! My '03's are the matte natural finish ones, made in Indonesia as you said.

I'm simply relieved that they're not blown out of the water by the new ones. The current Stage Customs are so...

Re: Can you tell a big difference?

Interesting...

I suspect that the 2003 Stage Customs are midway between the 90's editions and the current, tonally speaking. They're the best sounding drums that I've ever played but I've not...

Re: Can you tell a big difference?

I wonder how the current Stage Customs compare sound-wise to the older versions?

My SC kit was manufactured in or about 2003. The shells are Philippine Mahogany with an outer layer of Birch. I...

Re: Pros and Cons of rack mount vs. snare stand mounted tom

I used the bass drum mount and it worked out well. Dropped the cymbals to shoulder height while I was at it.

As far as ergonomics go, this was a pretty good setup for me.

Re: Pros and Cons of rack mount vs. snare stand mounted tom

I went with the supplied tom holder as it holds a cymbal arm too. Love Yamaha hardware!

I'm tempted to get a 'proper' rack but I'm not certain what problem I would be solving...

Re: Pros and Cons of rack mount vs. snare stand mounted tom

Agreed!

In the past I mounted the toms on a separate stand which suited me perfectly and allowed me to position the ride where I wanted it. I worried that I would get soft and spoiled using an...

Re: Pros and Cons of rack mount vs. snare stand mounted tom

Thanks for the feedback, all.

My kit has a bass drum mount for the toms so I'll use that. Being a Yamaha, it has a spot on the tom mount for a cymbal arm so that's a bonus.

I do find that snare...

Pros and Cons of rack mount vs. snare stand mounted tom

Quick question for y'all...

Given the choice between rack mounting a 12" tom or placing it on a snare stand in a 1-up 1-down configuration, is there a good reason to choose one over the other?

Re: Tuning toms and snare

I highly recommend checking out the 'Artist's Tunings' section of the Tune-Bot website. Tons of great suggestions there.

As for mine, my 10" tom is a 3rd octave C, the 12" is a second octave A and...

Re: Tuning toms and snare

Grab yourself a Tune-Bot and never look back. Your drums will sound incredible in 20 minutes or less.

Re: Tune Bot - Worthwhile or Not?

There's a learning curve at first but you'll be amazed at how quickly you'll zip around the kit once you get the hang of it.

I've been experimenting with the Artist Tunings posted on the Tune-Bot...

Just wanted to circle back and to thank everybody for the advice provided. I did exactly as you suggested and now I'm a full fledged member of the band.

Our first gig is scheduled for next month;...

Re: how to record a rehearsal on a budget?

A second hand BlackBerry Playbook might fit the bill.

I've got a 64GB model that I use with the "RecForgePro" app. The recordings sound fantastic and full-range, and then volume levelling feature...

Re: Phillipine Mahogany drums/my set/stuff i've heard

My 15 year old Yamaha Stage Customs are Philippine Mahogany with an outer layer of birch and they sound wicked good.

Proper heads and tuning make a difference, of course!

Re: Is it me or Peart's HH hit's the bottom of Tom

Quite possibly the greatest drummer of all time. Beyond incredible. Truly one of a kind.

OP, thanks for posting the link. That made my day!

Re: Raising your game to work with pro's. Tips, tricks and advice?

Thanks, Jon. I was hoping to hear what you had to say.

You'll see from an earlier response that serving the song is indeed high on my list of priorities. I'm relieved to hear that taking cues from...

Re: Raising your game to work with pro's. Tips, tricks and advice?

Good advice. I find it's those times when I bite off more than I can chew which force me to grow. My vocation has been like that too; 15 years ago I said "yes" to something I wasn't particularly...
