Re: Stage Etiquette

Set up fast and tear down fast. Especially when there are other bands sharing a bill. At a gig a couple weeks ago, I had minimal equipment (some electronic pads, a djembe and a cajon), but there was...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

And that's cool. But you promote your statements. And you promote them as indisputable facts, even as they are disputed by professional educators. I don't see much room for discussion or exchange of...

Re: Brookmeyer: Jazz is One Human Being Talking to Others

Bob was a contributor on the old JazzCentralStation forum back in the day and I always enjoyed picking his brain about music.

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

About WFD: The guy who actually played the fastest single stroke roll ever used traditional grip. Wasn't it in the vicinity of 1325 bpm or something? They made up some rule about how he achieved it...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

This topic is like politics; too much dogma repeated over and over, not enough listening.

Re: I must be an anachronism

Sound is obviously a huge element, but ergonomic considerations do matter. Depths obviously affect placement of a tom when you're competing with the bass drum for space. And for me, a snare drum less...

Re: Poll: Buddy Rich

I'm not sure how you're defining greatness. Taken in context, I would argue that nobody who has ever lived would "smoke" Buddy in any of those regards.

The drummers alive today have the benefit...

Re: On teaching

What I like most about Whiplash is it has generated conversations like this about drums and teaching. Even if you hate the movie, I think this stuff is interesting to talk about.

I just have...

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

I had an amazing experience Saturday night at the show. My daughter attends jazz shows with me pretty often but she didn't know what to expect when I told her this would be more "fusion" than what...

Re: You won't believe what Andy did

So Andy helped you fix your shrinkage problem, Larry?

Glad I wasn't there!

Terrible,

Re: So I've never seen this written this way.

I think it's confusing and, quite frankly, wrong to write a cut-time shuffle that way. But yes, anyone familiar with reading jazz is well-acquainted with the the "swung" notes being written as...

Re: Nice to see Dan Weiss finally .....

This cat really has his own thing going on. I just discovered him on a #VF15 recently, and now this. I'm kind of speechless. There's some legit innovation going on here. And that set sounds fantastic.

Re: Other songs that sound like other songs

Speaking of Taylor Swift. Check these two out, side-by-side (the link to the Billy Idol clip starts at the 0:43 mark).

Re: Andy inspired me to demo some of my snare drums.

Friggin' wonderful, man. Super-relaxed and flowing. Looks and sounds effortless.

Re: "So What" .... dig this

Man, I've never seen this one before. After a couple years of nothing new, suddenly some new stuff from this froup has started surfacing. Thanks for sharing, man. This is moving performance.

Last night, I got to witness the great Wayne Shorter Quartet. I'm not a spiritual man, but it was a spiritual experience. Wayne can really still play. And I have to admit, I got a...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

Yeah!

So guess who I'm seeing live with his quartet tomorrow night?

Yes, Wayne Shorter Quartet at DSO Orchestra Hall. I'm fired up for this one. It will be my first time seeing Wayne and this...

Re: Peart - would you hang out with him?

That is fantastic!

I didn't miss the part where Neil casually mentions in passing a psycho-stalker who threatened violence against him.

Neil is a really good writer—whether in the realm of...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I feel like this album doesn't get its due in discussions about the Wayne Shorter discography. It probably has something to do with being recorded in 1965 but not released until 1979.

It's right...

Re: Peart - would you hang out with him?

When I was a kid, Neil was my idol. I would have killed to meet him. I probably would have fit the "drooling sycophant" label at that time.

Today? Of course I would. I would be honored. I don't...

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

Jazz Cafe at Music Hall in Detroit is the venue. Impossibly beautiful place. Very intimate.

Re: Toms on the Backbeat

Here's a question: What do you call it?

There has to be a name for that beat.

Another example is La Bamba, as done by Los Lobos.

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

Yep, it's the Spectrum 40 band. That means Gary Husband, who contributes to Drummerworld quite often, will be there, too!

I saw Gary on drums with Allan Holdsworth many years ago and it was one of...

I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

I've led a pretty charmed musical existence, getting to see most of my heroes play live at one time or another. But I've never seen Billy Cobham perform live, one of my great regrets up until now.
