Re: My drum tuning

This technique for imparting pitch to drums is a very ancient procedure. It comes from the old Chinese manuver known as tu-ning. It involves the stretching of dead animal hides. Twist till you hear...

Re: Q: Black Nickel Plating?

In my opinion, it doesn't affect the sound all that much. If you put a Black Beauty, a COB, and a Ludwig regular brass shell in one room, and did a blindfold test, hardly anyone could tell much...

Re: Help me choose a second snare drum

I like Bermuda's idea, but if you need a lower drum, look at a good 14x6.5 wood snare with vintage edges. I like Ludwig Classic Maples, but there are other good drums too.

Re: Bearing Edges

Most makers offer a vintage type of edge, whigh is a round over, aout 30 degrees, but there are many versions. Craviotto website has a good explanation.

Re: Demos of the New Ludwig Copper Phonic?

Just from what I have heard so far, this could be a "barn burner" for Ludwig! I have no idea what took them so long to do this. . . . would love one with a tube lug option.

Re: Why do the wooden hoops on this snare have flat straight sections?

Very confusing. the gates for the snares are line up, so the flat side would face the tom/toms, and the player. with the little amount gained, it makes no sense to me.

Re: How do you knot your vintage strainers?

Looks good! I like 12 strand, sometimes 16. I never go above 16 on a 5" deep drum, and may go to 20 on a 6.5" or deeper snare. I think that you have to achieve balance between the snare sound and...

Re: Video Demo: Mapex Versatus Snare

Re: New snare wires - stretch?

Usually it is not the snare wire set themselves, but the means that hold them. Inferior straps or too soft cords can stretch. If not that, the throw off or butt plate screws that hold the cords could...

Re: New Guru snare drum :-)

Astounding!! I think Andy signs them so that if you want to keep a signed head on the drum, you have to order heads from them! :o)

Re: Polishing drums

I use a simple micropore cloth and plain water. It also helps if you don't let it get too bad to begin with.
