Re: index and middle finger or just index?

Heavy back beat rimshots - thumb.

Cymbals - index

Fast singles on snare - I used to use just the index, but since tilting the snare a bit more using both work pretty well, too.

When tilting...

Re: Using splash cymbals

Splashes are still just about what works in each context.

If a crash is too much a splash can be nice, but generally I just view them as a tool for accenting anything really. There are common...

Re: In with both feet!

Sounds like one of my first auditions. We basically went through the songs on their demo tape and just tried a few more at the audition, but I also had to go to the first gig days after and play all...

Re: Drummers who play other instruments also....

I originally a guitar player as well.

First of all, I now speak the language and can relate to a drummer on a much deeper level than before.

The other thing is that musically, ever since I...

Re: Vinnie Colaiuta back with Yamaha?

As long as he stays away from those Ludwigs. lol

I am partial to his Gretsch sound, though. Until he started taking the suspension off.

Re: 32nd notes in a 16th note fill - singles or doubles?

I think I generally fall into the single for louder playing category, but I practice everything equally when I can.

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

This can sort of work both ways.

On sexism is musician circles, I find that in a semi-professional environment of musicians all types of discrimination can flourish a lot more than other...

Trad can work fine, even for loud playing. Look at Todd Sucherman and Virgil Donati.

There are som many factors to this. Dave, Vinnie and Steve are sort of first generation playing that hard with...

Re: are the constant release and heel toe techniques the same?

As I understand it, heel toe are separate strokes with heel and toe.

Constant release is more of a rolling thing with the ball of your foot. Sort of a push-pull technique for your feet. Great...

Re: Importance of a good drum throne?

It's the most important piece of gear and apart from those bum shakers, they're all pretty reasonable priced.

I just use a roc'n'soc on a Gibraltar base. Nothing extra. It's just a solid a...

Re: Learning to play well on a 4 piece kit ....

I never bring more than I need for a certain situation.

My six-piece Vinnie copy is like a personal instrument to me, but very few musical situations in my life need a kit like that. I bring...

Re: Benny Greb Language of Drumming - DVD or No DVD??

DVD covers the same material, but it's really well made, fun and inspiring.

Re: Gary Chaffee PATTERNS: Your experiences and suggestions

I got these books when I first started drumming about years ago.

They got put into my routine just as part of my basic training.

Now that I've been through more stuff and can slowly start...

Re: Going to a Dave Weckl instensive and couldnt be more excited

I went to the one in Oslo this summer.

You'll be able to ask about pretty much anything, so my main tip is to think about and take some notes in that regard.

There will be a lot of focus on...

Re: Making the most out of limited practice time

I practice tons of things every day, but I also have many hours free to do so.

If I was really pushed for time I'm not even sure I'd take lessons except to ask specific quesions about a given area...

Re: 3 piece for Metal (is it good enough)?

I'd personally add a couple of floor toms. One would suffice, though. Flams on the snare can only get you so far and that deep tom sound is kind of important for other stuff as well.

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

If it's a kid with no musical background, the drumkit is pretty much off limits at my lessons. It might be used in a small way sometimes, but basics first.

Re: Where can I get a snare weight?

When you have everything. Moongels, rings of different sizes and even a Remo Weckl dampener, then this is something your girlfriend can buy you for christmas and you might end up using in the studio...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Splashes are the percussionists spice in the category other jangly stuff. I'll alsu gladly hit my 12" splash when I feel my 15" crash would be to much.

I got 8",10" & 12". Thinking about getting a...
