Re: Wood stain on a Fiberskyn !

Very beautiful! I'm impressed. I think I'm going to try this with my solid-shell ironwood set.

Re: Are drums ever too quiet?

I couldn't agree more! I have never, ever heard anyone ask a drummer to play louder. Yet many are obsessed with being louder. The industry caters to this, selling equipment that will "create...

Re: Stopping bass drum creeping forwards

Many times, there is no carpet, just a hard floor. It would be pretty douche to force the spurs into someone's wood floor.

I use a 2 by 3 foot olefin mat under the seat in these cases (the kinds...

Re: Stopping bass drum creeping forwards

I don't mind manufacturers stopping in occasionally to tell us what they're up to. Manufacturers made everything I touch. I need them. They need me.

As long as they aren't spammy or obnoxious,...

Re: Confused as to what is Jazz

That's getting as bad as metal for sub-genres. Next they'll have "Doom Vikingcore Black Jazz" and stuff.

Re: Gear Envy

Yes, I used to have gear envy, until I got a set that everyone else envies. I have nothing left to envy. Well, maybe some better cymbals.

Re: Apparently wood isnt important in drums

Sound is the final product - it comes last, only after everything else has been done first. Only after design, raw material selection, processing, shaping, sizing and finishing, do you get sound....

Re: Apparently wood isnt important in drums

You hit the nail on the head. Most drums, in fact, aren't made of "wood" anymore. They are made of a wood composite consisting of processed wood, glue, heat and pressure. The processing, chemicals...

Re: practicing without sticks...

I frequently practice coordination and independence whereever I am - driving, sitting, walking, anywhere. This just trains basic muscle memory and integrating technique with sticks, etc., is a whole...

Re: Most ideal 20" kick drum depth - help!

Ha! Chimp. Yeah, a drum that screeches and throws feces.

Re: Top five jazz albums for drummers?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all of these records come from a 20-year period. The preceding 30 years of jazz and the following 50 years are kind of left out.

Re: Most ideal 20" kick drum depth - help!

I tend to favor deeper bass drums, for more body and chomp. If you could get 20 by 20, that would be great.

Re: Looking at your foot

Yes, I think it is mainly that I can pay attention to exactly how far the beater is from the drum. Due to leverage, a small change in the footboard can mean a couple of inches in the beater position.

Re: The generation that the doctors betrayed

Word. By our standards, nature is cruel, ugly and violent in many ways, as well as the opposite of those things.

Looking at your foot

I was practicing today and I was having some trouble doing 16ths in some tricky places with my bass drum. In frustration, I stared at my right foot and tried executing the patterns and it was...

Re: The generation that the doctors betrayed

There is a lot of right-wing tinfoil hat conspiracy theory paranoia driving antivaxers. Vaccines are one of the great success stories of human civilization.

Re: The generation that the doctors betrayed

We actually entered at the best time (I was born in 1965). Vaccines had wiped out many diseases and were about to wipe out many more. Life expectancies were growing greatly. Mass literacy, access to...

My son used to collect those when he was little! All the different diseases.

Really, we mislead each other far, far more than the mass media ever can. Facebook memes, as one example, regularly...

Re: Can mods read PM's?

I sure hope they can! Personalities and drama erupts on a board occasionally and mods need to be able to do that.

Re: Country drummers!

Very true. Country has evolved a great deal - perhaps it has strayed from its roots. But some of the evolution is cool, like Hick Hop.

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Like .... who ...? Aside from me, I mean. I find his drumming simplistic, underdeveloped and dull as hell. Drummers love him because he is a surrogate for our insecurities about our instrument, since...
